Series: “Core Values for the True Disciple”
Message # 3: "The Value of Authentic Relationships to the Life of the Disciple”
Text: 1 Corinthians 5:11-15; 6:1
Introduction:
A- Core Value #2 :
1- The true disciple of Christ must seek to build authentic relationships:
a. with God,
b. with other members in the local church,
c. with his community
those who don’t know Jesus
B- What does the phrase "Authentic Relationships" mean?
1- "Authentic": means "being actually and exactly what is claimed.
Implies actual character not counterfeited, imitated, or adulterated.
Also implies good faith and sincerity of intention.[1]
2- "Relationship": a state of affairs existing between those having relations or dealings; the way in which two or more people, groups, countries, etc., talk to, behave toward, and deal with each other."[2]
3- "Authentic Relationships": "talking to, dealing with, and behaving toward other people in a way that is consistent with who we claim to be.
It means that we act in good faith, with sincerity of intention toward others; refusing to be shallow or counterfeit in our interactions."
C- The Apostle Paul modeled this type of authenticity:
(2 Corinthians 5:11–15)
"11 Because we understand our fearful responsibility to the Lord, we work hard to persuade others.
God knows we are sincere, and I hope you know this, too.
12 Are we commending ourselves to you again?
No, we are giving you a reason to be proud of us, so you can answer those who brag about having a spectacular ministry rather than having a sincere heart.
13 If it seems we are crazy, it is to bring glory to God.
And if we are in our right minds, it is for your benefit.
14 Either way, Christ’s love controls us.
Since we believe that Christ died for all, we also believe that we have all died to our old life.*
15 He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves.
Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them."
(2 Corinthians 6:1)
"As God’s partners, we beg you not to accept this marvelous gift of God’s kindness and then ignore it."
