Jesus is Coming again, so we must Watch and Prepared!

Notes
Transcript
The season of Advent begins today, ushering in a new year of God’s grace. We look to Jesus Christ our King, who first came into our world in Bethlehem’s manger, who comes daily into our hearts through Word and Sacrament, and who will come again in triumph on the Last Day. This morning we look at Jesus’ announcement of His final coming.
In a world and sometimes a church that is oblivious to the signs of the times, our text trumpets the Advent message that the Son of Man is Coming. So this morning we are going to talk about His coming and how He comes in judgment on the unprepared and how He comes in mercy toward His people.
Dear Friends in Christ:

JESUS IS COMING AGAIN, SO WE MUST WATCH AND PREPARED!

Let us pray: These are Thy words Oh Lord; Help us and Sanctify us in the Truth. Thy Word is Truth Amen.

He Comes in Judgment on the Unprepared

Two examples describe the consequences of being unprepared.
People in the days of Noah lived openly in sin and conducted “business as usual,” ignoring God’s threat of judgment.
They engaged in every sort of sin, constantly doing what seems right in their own eye.
declares: “The LORD was sorry that He made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. The LORD said, ‘I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; fir I am sorry that I have made them.’”
Their destruction followed.
An unprepared householder discovers too late that a thief has unexpectedly robbed him. ; ; ;
1 Thessalonians 5:2–4 NASB95
2 For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. 3 While they are saying, “Peace and safety!” then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape. 4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief;
2 Peter 3:10 NASB95
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.
Revelation 3:3 NASB95
3 ‘So remember what you have received and heard; and keep it, and repent. Therefore if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come to you.
Revelation 16:15 NASB95
15 (“Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes, so that he will not walk about naked and men will not see his shame.”)
Revelation 3:3 NASB95
3 ‘So remember what you have received and heard; and keep it, and repent. Therefore if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come to you.
2 Peter 3:10 NASB95
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.
1 Thessalonians 5:2–4 NASB95
2 For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. 3 While they are saying, “Peace and safety!” then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape. 4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief;
People today often are unprepared because they fail to watch for the coming of the Son of Man.
As in the days of Noah, people engage openly in sin and become preoccupied with pressing daily affairs, including hectic Christmas preparations. They ignore God’s threat of judgment on the unprepared.
Christians, too, like the unprepared homeowner, may fail to keep watch against the temptations of the Evil One and are caught unprepared to meet the Son of Man.
This begs the question for us all: “Is your heart prepared for the King, to meet the Son of Man when He comes?”

He Comes in Mercy Toward His People

A watchful and prepared Jesus came for the first time to live and die for the sins of the world. As He speaks in our text, He is preparing for the cross.
Romans 5:6 NASB95
6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
Advent reminds us of His first coming for us.
The Son of Man comes to us in the Word and the Sacraments to prepare us for His final coming, He makes us watchful. : “Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who stays awake...”
The Son of Man will receive us to Himself when He comes on the Last Day.
As we prepare again to celebrate Jesus’ birthday, we heed the warning to watch and be prepared because we know not the hour when the Son of Man will come. He supplies us with His unfailing mercy to make us watchful and prepared.
In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
