Mark 1:1 CSB
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
Who? [Anon; historical trad= someone named Mark to distinguish from other gospels, Mark…in spite of his challenging reputation; in conjunction with Peter (); after Paul’s death may have gone to Egypt and established churches]
Whom? [Gentile Christians in/around Rome; explaining of Jewish customs minimizes likelihood of Jewish primary audience; translates Aramaic to Greek & uses Latin]
When? [AD 63-64…at onset of Nero’s persecution & before Peter’s execution, not prior to Peter’s arrival in Rome AD 62]
Where? [most likely Rome…Paul there early 60s, Peter there prior to AD 64-65 martyrdom]
What? [a book about Jesus, & a book about being a disciple of Jesus; A topical/chronological arrangement of material in three parts (Intro <1.1-13>, Jesus Proclaims the Kingdom <1.14-8.21>, Jesus Teaches on Discipleship <8.22-10.53>, Jesus’ Death <11.1-15.47>, Conclusion/Resurrection <16.1-8…& 16.9-20>; like a source for Matt & Luke]
Why? [amid the threat of persecution, & to compile and arrange various collections of life and teaching of Jesus, & to establish a solid Christology, & clarify Jesus’ teachings about the future]
1.1-8
Historical context…John the Baptist (What does this provide?)
1.9-15

1.16-20
What does Mark emphasize about Jesus calling his first disciples? (Who and How he chose more than When)
1.21-45
Vv. 21-34 = actions of Jesus.
What were they? What result did they produce?
Vv. 35-38 = preaching/preparation of Jesus.
Praying led to readiness for proclamation…and furthering the message.
Vv. 39-45 = another healing of Jesus.
What is the deal with the ‘Messianic Secret?” (prevalent idea in Matt’s gospel; to not draw thrill-seeking crowds; to not draw attention of government before it was time)
In conclusion, what does Mark assert about Jesus? (People were coming to see him from everywhere)
Mark 1:14–15 CSB
After John was arrested, Jesus went to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God: “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”
