Today we are looking at some of the people Jesus was calling.
We will continue seeing Jesus’ controversy with the pharisees as well as Jesus letting the Pharisees know that their traditions will not work with the new covenant.
They will either have to turn from their traditions or from the revealed plan of God.
Follow Me
God desires Levi a tax collector to follow Him.
Tax collectors were extortioners, more than that they did it for a foreign government with the backing of that foreign government.
Out of everyone who you would choose to tell the most important message the world has ever heard.
Would you choose someone who was looked down on like this or someone important?
Levi is also known as Matthew, the one who wrote the first gospel.
Matthew does it, leaves all to follow Jesus.
A lucrative business, one that he had most likely paid to get.
He now leaves it to follow Jesus.
To sacrifice means that it will hurt or be an inconvenience.
When Matthew left, don’t think that because it was a long time ago that it was a simpler time.
They still had to pay bills, buy food and now Matthew didn’t have an income to pay for all of those.
But he had a greater calling, to follow Jesus.
What are you sacrificing for time with God?
We will sacrifice if it is for something important.
We sacrifice for what is important to us.
If my child is in the hospital, it is important for me to be by their side, I will drop everything to be with them.
Is Jesus important enough, for you to sacrifice for?
We sacrifice by money and time.
Are you spending time with God, are you sacrificing by helping around the church or mission work?
Are you sacrificing financially giving to people in need or giving to ministries that are furthering the kingdom.
Came to call sinners
The Pharisees grumbled at this
The word used here is gongozo LXX uses the same word here for the same word as Israel grumbling in the desert.
God is mad, He has provided for the people.
Performed many signs, protected them and they don’t believe that God will take care of them and were saying that they had it so much better in the land of Egypt.
Now the Pharisees are grumbling not realizing that Jesus is bringing them into a new covenant.
One that is better than the old and that even tax collectors can enter into.
Why would the pharisees be grumbling?
They had a strict
teaching of separation and being in contact with sinners would violate that separation, not realizing that under the new covenant
Are we separating ourselves from those who need the love of Christ?
Jesus came to call sinners to repentance.
That means that you must have contact with sinners, when you have contact with them your life and integrity must be such that you point them to Jesus.
When you look at people, what do you see?
Do you you see the addict, or do you see someone trying to numb the pain of an empty life that is caused by living for yourself and not for God?
Do you see the gossiper, who is trying to make people look worse so they look better.
Not knowing that Jesus sees all of your weaknesses and loves you in-spite of them.
Do you see the young person running from bad relationship to bad relationship desiring to be loved; not realizing that they already are loved.
Do people see our church as a hospital for the broken?
A place where we don’t condone what the bible calls sin.
But a place where they will be loved and pointed towards Jesus, and He calls the broken to repent.
Questioned about fasting
Once again Jesus is asked, why don’t you follow the traditions.
Fasting was to be done at a time of repentance, a time of mourning, a time of drawing near to God as a tool to aid us in our prayer life.
The traditions of the Pharisees had made it into a requirement.
Jesus says, the messiah is here.
What you have been praying for is coming to pass.
This is a time of rejoicing.
New Theology
Jesus revealing the good news will not fit inside their old traditions.
Salvation isn’t going to come from observing the traditions, it is going to come from knowing Jesus Christ.
This new covenant will not fit within the tradition of religion.
Are you holding onto a worldview that is not compatible with the teaching of Jesus?
The pharisees were held back by their view of strict observance to the oral law.
Do you believe in a God that is not present, He created us, but He’s not active in your life?
Maybe you believe in a God who is good, but He isn’t in control, He isn’t sovereign.
You ask “If He was how could there be so much evil.”
Maybe you believe that God is in control, but He isn’t good.
If He was, how could there be so much evil.
Maybe you come out of a different religion, and are dragging theological baggage with you that effects your view of God.
Maybe your mindset is to worship God on Sunday.
But the rest of the week you worship yourself.
You do what you want, when you want and don’t think about honoring God with your life.
We, just like the Pharisees need to get a right view of God.
Our wrong way of thinking and the truth of the gospel are incompatible and in the end we will end up with both views being destroyed and being totally spiritually lost if we do not have a right view of God.
Where we see Him as good, and sovereign.
Where He allows us to go through trials with an overall plan for the outcome.
Our job is to serve Him with our lives bring Him glory in all things.
