Luke 1:46–47 ESV
And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

Magnify the Lord

My soul & my spirit
Praise to God is an “all in” type of thing.
This can only be experienced by those who have given themselves fully to him.
Magnify
“Magnify the Lord”: Making God bigger
It doesn’t require you to take away your value.
It does mean “not seeing yourself more highly than you ought.” (Romans 12:3)
My savior
He is a God who saves
He is a God who saved ME!!
This is an acknowledgment of the personal impact God has had one YOUR life.

For…

(And here is why I praise Him…)
Luke 1:48 ESV
for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;

He looked down and saw me.

This characteristic of God is praise-worthy (in general)
Psalm 138:6 ESV
For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly, but the haughty he knows from afar.
But this praise is personal.
God looked down and saw me.
(of all people)
This is a perspective that you get only from the humility of magnifying God.
Luke 1:49 ESV
for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.
God didn’t just see me, He has provided for me.
Have you taken an account of what God has done for you personally?
Amazement that a Holy God would bless me a sinner.
Holy contrast...
You, God, are powerful, and you are also holy.
Why would you do such great things for me?

Praise for the World-wide mission of the Gospel

Mary’s perspective here is limited to nation of Israel
It would be decades before the full scope would be revealed
We still see the truth about God and the nature of the Gospel.
We still see the “reason” to praise Him and commit to Him.

His mercy is for those who fear him.

Luke 1:50 ESV
And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation.
True relationship with God has always been exclusive.
The unifying nature of God’s mighty power
“Scatters the proud”
Brought down mighty - exalted the humble
Filled the hungry – sent rich away empty
His power is unifying because it makes all things equal.
We are al sinners in needs of a savior.
Luke 1:54–55 ESV
He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”
God fulfills His promises
Abraham and his offspring forever
Not only is Jesus a response to God’s promise to Abraham
It’s a response in-spite of Israel’s wicked history
It’s a response (as we know) to the continued wickedness of all mankind.
God has called you right where you are, and He has called you to something great.
