intro

Luke 1:26–38 AV
26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. 29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. 30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? 35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. 36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing shall be impossible. 38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
When it comes to Mary, people tend to go to one of two extremes.
They either magnify her so much that Jesus takes second place, or they ignore her and fail to give her the esteem she deserves and we should remeber her for her obedience and grace.
Luke 1:48 AV
48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
Mary was a normal woman, she was a sinner like the rest of us. Bjut she was also a woman of grteat and wondferful faith.
What do we know about Mary?
She was a Jewess of the tribe of Judah, a descendant of David, and a virgin.
She was engaged to a carpenter in Nazareth named Joseph (Matt. 13:55), and apparently both of them were poor.
Leviticus 12:8 AV
8 And if she be not able to bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for her, and she shall be clean.
Luke 2:24 AV
24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.
Among the Jews at that time, engagement was almost as binding as marriage and could be broken only by divorce. In fact, the man and the woman were called “husband” and “wife” even before the marriage took place.
Mary’s surprise (vv. 26–33).
When you consider Gabriel’s greeting, you can well understand why Mary was perplexed and afraid: “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you!”
Why would an angel come to greet her? In what way was she “highly favored” (“greatly graced”) by God? How was God with her?
Mary’s response reveals her humility and honesty before God. She certainly never expected to see an angel and receive special favors from heaven.
There was nothing unique about her that such things should happen. If she had been different from other Jewish girls, as some theologians claim she was, then she might have said, “Well, it’s about time! I’ve been expecting you!” No, all of this was a surprise to her.
Gabriel then gave her the good news: she would become the mother of the promised Messiah whom she would name Jesus.
Mary’s surrender (vv. 34–38).
Luke 1:34–38 AV
Mary knew what would happen, but she did not know how it would happen.

Compare humble faith with doubt.

Luke 1:18–20 AV
18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. 19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. 20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
Whereby shall i know this vs how shall this be.
Zacharias is a statment of doubt, he does not believe what the angel is saying.
Mary’s is one opf faith, thougfh humble - she believes what the angel says but is not shure how it will happen.
Let me tell you, its ok not to know how. It ok to be confused, its ok to look at a situation and not know how God is going to work it.
But so long as you know that God can! Faith look to God!

Pain

She believed the promise, but she did not understand the performance. How could a virgin give birth to a child?
First, Gabriel explained that this would be a miracle, the work of the Holy Spirit of God.
Joseph, her betrothed, would not be the father of the child.
Did you know that some people thought Mary had been unfaithful to Joseph and that Jesus was “born of fornication”.
John 8:38–41 AV
38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father. 39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham. 40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham. 41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
This was a part of the pain that Mary had to bear all her life.
Luke 2:35 AV
35 (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

Encouragment

The angel ended his message by giving Mary a word of encouragement: her aged relative Elizabeth was with child, proving that “with God nothing shall be impossible.”
God gave a similar word to Abraham when He announced the birth of Isaac
Genesis 18:14 AV
14 Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.
That our God can do anything is the witness of many, including Job
Job 42:2 AV
2 I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee.
Jeremiah
Jeremiah 32:17 AV
17 Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:
and even our Lord Jesus.
Matthew 19:26 AV
26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
The virgin birth proves this, Chriostam reminds us of God’s miracle working power.
Psalm 33:9 AV
9 For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.
Mary’s believing response was to surrender herself to God as His willing servant.
What is God speaking into you life today?
It is healing, peace, hoipe? Forgivness, strength, patience?
She experienced the grace of God and believed the Word of God, and therefore she could be used by the Spirit to accomplish the will of God.
