Intro

Text - John 16.13; 1 John 4.4-6

John 16:13 NKJV
13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
1 John 4:4–6 NKJV
4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 5 They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them. 6 We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

Background

Jesus was giving farewell messages to His disciples.
Jesus promised the Holy Spirit, and introduced Him as the Helper
Grk. PARAKLETOS - one called to help
Comforter - KJV
Helper - NKJV etc.
a parakletos is a helper, one who speaks in behalf of another, similar to a legal advocate
In 1 John 4, the Apostle John was telling the readers how to identify the spirit of truth from the spirit of error

The Main Point

The Holy Spirit is directly connected to the Word of Truth - It is the Spirit of Truth.
So, how do we know whether the Holy Spirit is “present” in “other Christian believers”?
Present - meaning abiding, dwelling; the person have been baptized with the Holy Spirit
Other Christian believers - meaning Christians belonging to denominational churches

Sermon Points

The Parakletos

The Holy Spirit was given to “abide forever”
John 14:16–18 NKJV
16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
This is “abiding” begins in the baptism of the Holy Spirit
“abide” gives passive connotation to the coming of the Holy Spirit
“baptism” implies active work arrival
1 John 3:24 NKJV
24 Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.
THE HOLY SPIRIT “ABIDES” IN ORDER TO BE THE EVER-PRESENT HELP IN TIME OF NEED!
The Holy Spirit was given to testify of Christ.
John 15:26 NKJV
26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.
testify - means “to bear witness”, to give witness/testimony
The Holy Spirit is the witness that Jesus is the Son of God
Matthew 3.16
1 John 5.6-10
1 John 4.2-3
Docetism - a belief that Jesus was not a real human, but a phatom, an illussion, or else he was not God.
The Holy Spirit is the witness that we are children of God
Romans 8.9
Romans 8.14-16
The Holy Spirit was given to guide into all truth.
John 16:13 NKJV
13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
In the first place, the Holy Spirit “dwells” because you belived in the truth.
Ephesians 1.13
The Holy Spirit is present to vindicate the Truth in you.
Now, the Holy Spirit takes to “more” truths in Scripture.
All truth is BIBLE-BASED - 1 John 4.4-6
All truth includes THINGS TO COME.

The Holy Spirit and Regeneration

Did the Reformers and the early Protestant churches receive the Holy Spirit during their time?
It is believe by some in the Message that the baptism of the Holy Spirit came only with the end-time message.
Testimonies of Conversion (SEE CLIPPINGS)
Martin Luther - peace with God
John Wesley - “strangely warmed”
Chales Spurgeon -
I believe that the Holy Spirit baptized Martin Luther and many of the Reformers who followed him out of Roman system.
The declaration and teaching might be different, even the experience, but the reality is the same.
The ultimate TEST of one who is BORN AGAIN!
The Holy Spirit in him/her GUIDES him/her into all truth.
When a Spirit-filled person meets the truth, he/she can only receive
2 Corinthians 13:8 NKJV
8 For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.
When a Spirit-filled Christian reads the Bible, he/she can only say Amen to the truth!
1 John 4.6
The Spirit-filled person WILL NOT SPEAK AGAINST THE TRUTH.
Mark 9.38-39
1 Corinthians 12.3

Conclusion

Who has the Spirit of Truth?
Those who do not speak against the truth, or against the work of the Spirit.
Those who do not twist the Word of God to fit their beliefs.
Who does not have the Spirit of Truth?
Those who resist the truth that God is giving to them!
Those speak against the work of God!
