What is Faith?

Is faith of the mind? Is faith of the heart? If we do as Paul exhorts in and renew our minds - does this lead to increased faith? Where does faith come from. The bible says
Romans 12:3 KJV 1900
3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
What is “the measure of faith?” If I have “the measure of faith,” how do I release it? Faith is not of the mind! Faith is of the heart!
Romans 10:10 KJV 1900
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

1. According to my faith be it done unto me

Matthew 9:28–29 KJV 1900
28 And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. 29 Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.
Mt
Matthew 9:28 KJV 1900
28 And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.
Not according to the power of Jesus - but, according to the blind men’s faith! Jesus asked the question and then He put the burden of proof on them! This may make us uncomfortable but Jesus did it! Jesus was essentially saying to the; “put up or shut up!” The gist of this is, that sometimes the problem is simply my lack of faith! Faith is not a static, constant, crystallized thing - faith is alive! Faith moves! Faith changes! Faith must be understood on a spiritual level! Faith is of the heart - not of the mind! Consider this . . .
Mark 9:24 KJV 1900
24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.
Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.
He received his miracle! He chose to believe! We CHOOSE to believe or not to believe!
His heart believes but
His head is giving him problems.
Faith will work in your HEART with thoughts of doubt in your MIND! (Kenneth Hagin)
Satan will always come up with a yeah but! I believe! I believe! I can believe! I am a believer! Faith is trust and confidence in a person! That person is JESUS! (Keith Moore)
What is Faith?
Hebrews 11:1 KJV 1900
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Hebrews 11:1 AMP
1 NOW FAITH is the assurance (the confirmation, the title deed) of the things [we] hope for, being the proof of things [we] do not see and the conviction of their reality [faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses].
Hebrews 11:1 The Message
1 The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It’s our handle on what we can’t see.

Faith is the substance . . .

Faith is the foundation - that which stands under.
Faith is . . . Strongs 5287. In general, that which underlies the apparent, hence, reality, essence, substance; that which is the basis of something, hence, assurance guarantee, confidence.
In general, that which underlies the apparent, hence, reality, essence, substance; that which is the basis of something, hence, assurance guarantee, confidence.

Faith is . . . Title (deed) n. — a legal document to effect a transfer of property and to show the legal right to possess it.

----------
Faith is . . . The essence: the basic, real, and invariable nature of a thing or its significant individual feature or features (Dictionary.com).

Of things hoped for . . .

Essence: the basic, real, and invariable nature of a thing or its significant individual feature or features:
Things hoped (Confidently expected!) for. Joyful, confident expectation! Faith can be summed up in one word - EXPECTATION! Faith means trust in the person, leading to a confident expectation! I am persuaded==> I am hopeful==>I confidently expect! (Keith Moore)
Dictionary.com
Hope is positive imagination (Andrew Wommack).
Hope is positive imagination. I can see myself healed! I can see myself seeing perfectly. I can see myself hearing perfectly! I can see myself with normal blood sugar, normal cholesterol, and normal blood pressure! (Andrew Wommack)
I can see myself healed!
I can see myself seeing perfectly.
I can see myself hearing perfectly!
I can see myself with normal blood sugar, normal cholesterol, and normal blood pressure!
There is a difference between faith and hope! Faith is the substance, i.e., the foundation for that which we are hoping! If all I have is hope - then I am not in faith! Hope is always future!
Pet peeve: I am waiting for the manifestation! Waiting implies passivity! Waiting implies it might happen - and then again, it might not! Some day, I hope it will happen - I am waiting!
Be proactive! Pursue the manifestation! I need to aggressively take hold of my healing!

The evidence of things not seen . . .

Evidence - Strongs 1650. Proof; persuasion. Thus faith is confidence in what is hoped for, since it is the divinely given conviction of things unseen (TDNT). The evidence, normally based on argument or discussion, as to the truth or reality of something—‘proof, verification, evidence for.’ ‘a proof of the things we cannot see’ or ‘evidence that what we cannot see really exists’ (Loew-Nida). Evidence is - “demonstration”: convincing proof to the believer: the soul thereby seeing what the eye cannot see.
----------
Faith believes what it sees not. Augustine said,
“For if thou seest there is no faith; the Lord has gone away so as not to be seen: He is hidden that He may be believed; the yearning desire by faith after Him who is unseen is the preparation of a heavenly mansion for us; when He shall be seen it shall be given to us as the reward of faith.”
Sometimes we say something like "seeing is believing!" The bible says the exact opposite. According to God's Word "believing is seeing!"
Thus faith is confidence in what is hoped for, since it is the divinely given conviction of things unseen (TDNT).
The God-kind of faith

Mark 11:22 KJV 1900
22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.

Have faith in God

Have the faith OF God. Have the God kind of faith (Young's Literal) - "Have faith of God . . ." Douay-Rheims says "Have the faith of God!"
The God-kind of faith never fails.
Literally God's faith!
So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God! (). The strength of my faith will be in direct proportion to the amount of the Word of God that is fed into it! The God-kind of faith never fails.

If I am standing on a word from God - it will come to pass!
the evidence, normally based on argument or discussion, as to the truth or reality of something—‘proof, verification, evidence for.’ ‘a proof of the things we cannot see’ or ‘evidence that what we cannot see really exists’ .
If I am standing on hope - that isn’t faith!
(LN)
----------
If I don’t see the manifestation - then perhaps I am not in faith! I may just be in hope!

Blind Bartimaeus

evidence—“demonstration”: convincing proof to the believer: the soul thereby seeing what the eye cannot see.
Mark 10:46–52 KJV 1900
46 And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging. 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me. 48 And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me. 49 And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee. 50 And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus. 51 And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight. 52 And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.
Thou Son of David . . .
The Son of David is Jesus! Bartimaeus is proclaiming Jesus to be the Messiah - the answer to his problems!
Bartimaeus had heard about Jesus; and
Somehow that hearing had transformed him and he had revelation knowledge that Jesus was the Messiah!
This revelation knowledge propelled him to action!
He cried out to Jesus;
People told him to shut up and he cried even more (this is when you know, that you know, that you know that Jesus is the answer! - you will not be stopped - you will dig a hole in the roof!); He was making a demand on Jesus!
Jesus stood still - someone had made a demand on Him and he stopped; and
Jesus commanded him to be called;
He cast away his garment, rose and went to Jesus;
His garment was his identity! It was what identified him as a blind beggar. Lepers had garments; the blind had garments; the Romans had garments; priests had garments! Each of them had an identifying garment. He no longer needed his garment! He wasn’t healed yet but in anticipation, he cast it aside. He had made a demand on Jesus! Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen! He had not seen the manifestation - but he cast aside his garment! Bartimaeus had a revelation in his heart and he threw off his garment before he saw his healing!
Jesus asked him what he wanted; and
Jesus asked him what he wanted; he put it back on Bartimaeus. What do you want that I should do unto you?
He told Jesus he wanted his sight
Jesus answered, “go thy way, thy faith hath made thee whole!”

Will Jesus do it for me? Watch this!

Mark 11:23–24 KJV 1900
23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. 24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
Jesus is saying to me, “What is it that you want Me to do for you?” Whatsoever things you desire, when you pray, believe that you receive them and you shall have them! These are RED letters! Red letters trump everything!
Jesus said, “Thy faith has made you whole!” How was his faith demonstrated?
He had a revelation knowledge of who Jesus was!
He cast aside his garment; and
Spoke! He made a demand on God!
All of this is faith! Bartimaeus was not waiting on the manifestation! He was proactive! He was aggressive! He knew Who Jesus was!

Understanding Faith

Three Kinds of Faith
Proactive Faith - faith that takes action! Faith that wakes up in the morning and says this is my day! Proactive faith seizes the moment! Proactive faith kills the snake!
Blind Bartimaeus (Mark 10)
The woman with the issue of blood
Jairus
The paralytic man lowered through the roof
Know who you are IN CHRIST! Know your authority to use His name! How does this come? You have to have a relationship with Him! Know your authority IN HIM! If you know you are IN HIM and the doctor tells you that you have cancer - you can say, “No, I don’t! I am IN CHRIST!” That was nailed to the cross - Jesus took that for me! I know that dog! Rebuke the cancer in the name of Jesus - you have authority over it! You have to know that you know! There has to be more than just hope!
Reactive Faith - hearing a word and responding! They reacted and received their healing.
Reactive Faith - hearing a word and responding! They reacted and received their healing.
The man at the pool of Bethesda (John 5)
The man at the Gate Beautiful
Inactive Faith - someone who hears a word and does not respond! Inactive faith waits!

How does faith come?

Romans 10:17 KJV 1900
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Faith does not come by hearing the word of God. This is a two part issue here.
Faith comes by hearing; and
Hearing comes by the word of God!
There is more than one kind of hearing
There is normal hearing through the physical ears; and
There is spiritual hearing through our spiritual ears!
Faith comes by hearing through our spiritual ears. What did Jesus say?
John 6:63 KJV 1900
63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
Romans 10:8–10 KJV 1900
8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Charles Capps
Faith comes by hearing yourself speak the word of God! You hear yourself speak with your inner ear - the bone structure inside your ear. God designed our ears so that our inner ear picks up our voice and feeds it directly into the heart! That is what Paul meant when he said that the word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth and in thy heart! It’s important for me to understand why we speak the word of God - it isn’t just a mechanical thing - that’s the way we get it into our heart. It won’t work just in the head. You can memorize the entire bible and will never have any faith at all. Memorizing gets it into your head, but not necessarily in your heart. You can only believe with your heart. Look what Jesus said in :
Mark 11:23–24 KJV 1900
23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. 24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
We need to get the word from our mouth into our heart! For it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks. Interestingly enough, it goes from our mouth to our heart and then from our heart to our mouth!
Get your mind renewed (say what God says) and you will begin thinking like God thinks and then it won’t be too long until you begin to believe like God believes! A thermostat is the goal-setter that instructs the unit what to produce, i.e., heat or cold. Your head is the goal setter and governs what the heart works on.
Back to Barry Bennett
It is with the heart that man believes unto salvation! We must get the word into our hearts - not just in our ears. Until it gets to your heart, you haven’t heard it yet. The heart must be touched by the word of God!

Two more kinds of faith

Human faith
God faith
Much of what we walk in is human faith. It is renewed mind faith. It’s persistent faith. It’s bulldog faith! Human faith has potential. Sometimes people can will themselves to be healed. The problem is that many Christians believe this is divine faith. So, we try to fabricate faith. We try to will ourselves healed!
The God kind of faith has one source. I must hear in my spirit the word of God! You can’t get more faith by fasting. You can’t get more faith by praising. You can’t pray for more faith! The bible clearly says that faith comes by hearing and hearing comes by the word of God. Faith comes by spiritually hearing the word of God. Faith cannot be fabricated! Faith is received! Faith cometh!

Jesus Could Do Nothing in Himself

John 5:19 KJV 1900
19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
This is constantly repeated in the Scripture. Jesus came to do the will of the Father! The Father is manifesting Himself to His Son, Jesus! Jesus will reveal Himself to me (). Jesus can do nothing of Himself - only what He sees the Father do! Jesus was limited to having a revelation before He could minister. Jesus went off by Himself for great periods of prayer. Was Jesus seeing the next day’s ministry when He prayed? Was Jesus getting a revelation from God when He prayed?
----------
John 15:5 KJV 1900
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
John 15:7 KJV 1900
7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
Jesus can do nothing of Himself - only what He sees the Father do!
Without God, Jesus could do nothing! Without Jesus, we could do nothing! We are trying to do the works of Jesus - and even greater works - without doing what He did! He had to have a word from God in order for Him to be able to minister - could it be any less with us? How can we minister unless we have a word from God! How can we do greater works without the faith that comes from the word?
We must hear Him. Faith comes by hearing! We must have a word from God!
Matthew 4:4 KJV 1900
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Faith is not a static thing! We must be in continual contact with the word in order to have faith on a continual basis. The bible says that faith comes by hearing - it doesn’t say that faith came by hearing!
Faith is a relationship - not a formula!
The God-kind of faith is born of God in the Spirit. The invisible over the visible.
2 Corinthians 4:18 KJV 1900
18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
Look past the physical and into the spiritual. Focus on God. The problem might still exist but we need to focus on Him! In my spirit I have the same power that raised Jesus from the dead! Look at the answer instead of the problem! What do you see with your spirit?
What you see in your spirit is what you are going to harvest in your life!
The things which are seen are temporal - which means they are subject to change.
Your bank account is subject to change
Your body is subject to change
Your circumstances are subject to change
Are you looking at the eternal (the Word) - or you looking at the temporal? Until I can take my eyes off my diabetes and get them on my Healer and see myself healed - I will not see the manifestation. If I can see my healing - I will be healed. As Andrew says, “You’ve already got it!” The God-kind of faith is unstoppable. God says let there be - and there is! That is the God-kind of faith!

Faith sees . . .

2 Corinthians 4:13 KJV 1900
13 We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;
The first word in the next verse says KNOWING! Do I know?
(Keith Moore): The spirit of faith is described in . The spirit of faith is not the same thing as the knowledge of faith! The Bible also says we have not been given the spirit of fear. The spirit of fear is not just feelings of fear. Faith is not knowledge and faith is not understanding! Understanding is not required for faith! I do not have to understand in order to believe (or trust)! I don't have to understand to enjoy, to experience something! says to trust in the Lord and lean not to my own understanding . . ." Faith is a choice! Believing is a choice! Trusting is a choice!

Faith will work in your heart with doubt in your head! (Kenneth Hagin)
Just because a thought or a feeling crosses your mind does not mean you have changed your decision to believe in your heart! You cannot let the thought stay or it will affect your heart. You just grab the thought, cast it down and say NO! NO! that is not what I believe. Then, you are good! You have not cast away your confidence. You have not decided not to believe. Belief is of the heart! (). If the enemy can get you into the reasoning realm, he will defeat you! If you will keep the enemy in the faith realm, he can't do anything with you and you will defeat him.

Therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak
(Keith Moore): The same spirit is in me - as was in Moses; Abraham; David; Daniel; Caleb; Joshua; the Apostles, and; Jesus!
I believe, therefore I speak! Saying is the number one action to release your faith! The number one expression of my faith is through my words!
When I speak faith-filled words, ministering spirits are released to make my spoken words come to pass! God is more than enough! We must say what He says! Give me my mountain! () Believe with your heart and say with your mouth! We have the same spirit of faith in us and on us! The woman with the issue of blood said, "I shall be healed!" ()

Faith is aggressive

Examples of aggressive faith . . .
Blind Bartimaeus
The woman with the issue of blood
Jairus
Each was aggressive and got results! This is my day!

Faith grows . . .

2 Thessalonians 1:3 KJV 1900
3 We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;
Jesus always responded to whatever criteria was set by those with proactive faith! they set the agenda! Jesus responded!
Faith is not static. We need to hear from God daily. We need a new, fresh word! Testimonies are great but you can’t live there.
Look at how the bible described faith:
Little faith (Matthew 8:26)
Great faith (Matthew 8:10)
Little faith (Matthew 17:20)
Full of faith (Acts 6:8-15)
Shipwrecked faith (I Timothy 1:19)
Rich in faith (James 2:5)
Faith made perfect (James 2:22)
Dead faith (James 2:26)
Faith that overcomes the world ()
A living word from God will overcome every obstacle! A living word from God regarding my healing = me getting healed!
Your words don’t determine your faith - your faith determines your words!
You can parrot things trying to conjure up faith! Positive confessions are good but it is when you get a living word from God that you know, that you know, that you know that your faith has been born!
Faith is a relationship! We must spend time in the presence of God!
If you want your healing - get with the Healer! When you receive a word from Him - you will be healed! I have it! I take it! I’m healed! Meditate on these things!
