Introduction

One of the values that we have here at Hilltop Church is Expositional Preaching. That is, more often than not, we study through a book of the Bible or a specific section of a book and allow scripture to dictate the topics that we preach about. We do this because we believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God, and every part of it is meant to be read and all of the topics that are brought up are there, because God thought it important we know what He thinks about those topics and how it should mold our lives. The more uncomfortable part about expositional preaching is that there are some uncomfortable topics that are brought up throughout scripture. It was inevitable, but we have hit one of those uncomfortable topics in our passage today. Jesus did not shy away, so neither are we.
So, get your squirming in your seats out now. Look around nervously at everyone now. Get it out of your system.
Our passage this morning is .
Matthew 5:27–30 ESV
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
