On Monday I read the text and then did the sermon outline. On Tuesday we watched the latest Spider-Man movie, Far From Home. The premise is that a hero from another earth comes to our earth to warn us and he’ll us fight several bad guys. The only thing is,is that the new hero, whose name is Mysterio is actually the bad guy and faking the monsters with hologram and theatric technology. He paints himself as a savior, but Spider-Man finds clues to discover that Mysterio is a fake.

Spider-Man was able to discern true from false, but that was only after a little while because he really wanted Mysterio to be the good guy. He wanted him to be the new superhero for the world.

How do comic book hero movies coincide or even remotely be linked with the Bible?

Or better yet, why do we look for false saviors, even today, when we know about and can know personally the real Savior, Jesus?

I. Do Not be Deceived by False Words (1-2)
We hear a lot of news and information nowadays. There are 24 hour News sources, podcasts, websites, and people’s opinions. You can get any side of a story you want. News or opinions you agree with or don’t. The problem is it is hard to know which outlets to trust.

Thessalonica had a similar problem, but they did not have instant access to information. They received news from Paul when he taught them all about Jesus and the scriptures and then he left.

So someone with news or authority comes into town and starts teaching or prophesying and presumably, because Paul mentions it here, with some kind of letters supposedly from Paul.

But it seems like the letters or their interpretation of scripture did not match what Paul said. The new teacher or teachers were telling the Thessalonians that they missed the rapture and they were now entering into the tribulation because of the persecution they were facing.

People were taking the Scripture and twisting it for their own purposes and lying to the church. It seemed some of the people must have been smart enough and knew or remembered what Paul said and somehow got Paul the news and so Paul writes back.

The same thing is happening today.people take and bend scripture for what they want it to say. In the book, Scripture Twisting: 20 Ways the Cults Misread the Bible, by James Sire, points out different tactics that people or cults use to make the Bible say what they want it. To say.

TS: But the people did not know the signs that the Bible points to how and when the Day of the Lord would come.
II. Do Not be Deceived by False Prophets (3-8)
A biblical text is referred to but is either not quoted in the way the text appears in any standard translation or is wrongly attributed.
Example: The Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who was the spiritual advisor to the Beatles in the 60s says, “Christ said, ‘Be still and know that I am God.'” Whereas this text is found ONLY in Psalms 46:10.
Paul explains The day of The Lord will not come until a few things happen:
The rebellion comes first
TWISTED TRANSLATION
The biblical text is retranslated, not in accordance with sound Greek scholarship, to fit a preconceived teaching of a cult.
The man of lawlessness is revealed
The restraint or restrainer will also be removed or
Example: the Jehovah’s Witnesses translate as “In [the] beginning the Word was, and the Word was with God, and the word was a god.”
How will he be revealed? He will think he is greater than any god and he thinks he is God.
WORD PLAY
The man of lawlessness, or the antichrist, his power or effect is being restrained by a power, the power of God.
A word or phrase from a biblical translation is examined and interpreted as if the revelation had been given in that language.
The word for revealed is where we get the word for apocalypse. That is what the apocalypse really is,its not just the end times or the destruction of the world, but it is the last revealing of Jesus, the antichrist and God.
Example: Mary Baker Eddy says the name Adam consist of two syllables, A DAM, which means an obstruction, in which case, Adam signifies “the obstacle which the serpent, sin, would impose between man and his Creator.”
However, the Hebrew word Adam, means man or mankind and has nothing to do with the English word dam.
How many remember TV before High definition? The picture was good. You could see what was going on and everything looked normal, and it was all we had.
But once you say your first movie of sporting event it was like wow, game over. You an see the grass on the baseball field like you were standing on the field. You can see And now, you can go to Costco or Best Buy and see the 4K TVs and you can see individual feathers on a bird or how it looks like you can touch the stones of the pyramid.
THE FIGURATIVE FALLACY
But no matter how clear and real the picture looks, it is not the real thing. You can’t feel the grass and smells of a baseball stadium, or hear the bird in your house.
Either (1) mistaking literal language for figurative language or (2) mistaking figurative language for literal language.
False prophets and false idols are like the old black and white TVs they show you the picture you can watch the movie or show and you think it is great until you see the real thing. And even when the idol is in 4K definition, the real thing is still better.
Example of (1): Mary Baker Eddy interprets EVENING as “mistiness of mortal thought; weariness of mortal mind; obscured views; peace and rest.”
Example of (2): The Mormon theologian James Talmage interprets the prophesy that “thou shalt be brought down and speak out of the ground” to mean that God’s Word would come to people from the Book of Mormon which was taken out of the ground at the hill of Cumorah.
If I have a high definition picture of my wife and kids, it is not the same thing as having them with me.
When Satan tempted Jesus he employed these tactics to try to throw Jesus off of his game and get him to sin. But jesus knew the Scripture and was able to correct him or fill in the rest of the missing verses. We must be like Jesus in every way and we can strive to develop the knowledge and trust in God’s word. there are many people who get things mostly right, but that still means they are all the way wrong.
TS: But the people did not know the scripture that the Bible points to how and when the Day of the Lord would come.
It is the same with our life with Jesus. No matter how tempting or perfect the false messiah look , he is not God. There is only one God, and we have to follow Him.

Application: (13-17)
1. Know God’s Word
The man of lawlessness is revealed
The restraint or restrainer will also be removed get out of the way.
People are going to use the Bible against you. They may have lot of verses memorized and even rove to you this is what it says. But if they take things out of context or just link verses together improperly, thy are perverting God’s word. We may all make mistakes, but if people twist God’s Word on purpose, then they are manipulating and trying to Control people.
And to stop from being controlled, you must know your Bible, know God’s true word. And know how to use the Bible and apply it. You ave to know what the Bible is and more importantly Who the Bible is about.
How will he be revealed? He will think he is greater than any god and he thinks he is God.
2. Know the True Savior (Jesus)
The man of lawlessness, or the antichrist, his power or effect is being restrained by a power, the power of God.
The false messiah or Antichrist is just that: the opposite of Jesus. He is the opposite of a savior he is one who tries to run everything. He is run by aSatan as Paul says. But we saw Jesus interact with Satan in the Gospels when he is tempted and he cannot be controlled.
The word for revealed is where we get the word for apocalypse. That is what the apocalypse really is,its not just the end times or the destruction of the world, but it is the last revealing of Jesus, the antichrist and God.
The man of lawlessness is the same person mentioned in , and and 24.
3. Know the True Miracle (Grace)
How many remember TV before High definition? The picture was good. You could see what was going on and everything looked normal, and it was all we had.
But once you say your first movie of sporting event it was like wow, game over. You an see the grass on the baseball field like you were standing on the field. It is the same with our life with Jesus. No matter how tempting or perfect the false messiah look , he is not God. There is only one God, and we have to follow Him.
The false prophets are always going to be here. Jesus says in Matthew24: 3-8 3 While he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples approached him privately and said, “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what is the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”
4 Jesus replied to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and they will deceive many. 6 You are going to hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, because these things must take place, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines[a] and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these events are the beginning of labor pains.
Do Not be Deceived by False Miracles (9-12)
The Antichrist will do all kids of signs and wonders that impress the people But Satan is behind the power that the antichrist operates from.
On the mount of Olives, Jesus explains to his disciples In again, 23 “If anyone tells you then, ‘See, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘Over here!’ do not believe it. 24 For false messiahs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. 25 Take note: I have told you in advance. 26 So if they tell you, ‘See, he’s in the wilderness!’ don’t go out; or, ‘See, he’s in the storerooms!’ do not believe it. 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28 Wherever the carcass is, there the vultures will gather.
Paul’s words andJesus’ words almost match exactly.
Before arriving in Thessalonica, Paul and some of his companions already experienced phase prophets performing some kind of false signs. Luke tells us in starting in verse 6, “When they had traveled the whole island as far as Paphos, they came across a sorcerer, a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus. 7 He was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. This man summoned Barnabas and Saul and wanted to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the sorcerer (that is the meaning of his name) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul away from the faith.
9 But Saul—also called Paul—filled with the Holy Spirit, stared straight at Elymas 10 and said, “You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery, you son of the devil and enemy of all that is right. Won’t you ever stop perverting the straight paths of the Lord? 11 Now, look, the Lord’s hand is against you. You are going to be blind, and will not see the sun for a time.” Immediately a mist and darkness fell on him, and he went around seeking someone to lead him by the hand.
12 Then, when he saw what happened, the proconsul believed, because he was astonished at the teaching of the Lord.”
A miracle is an event which the forces of nature—including the natural powers of man—cannot of themselves produce, and which must, therefore, be referred to a supernatural agency (Fisher 1900, 9).
When Jesus performed signs, even his enemies did not deny the effect of such; they merely attempted to attribute his power to some other source (e.g., Satan; cf. ). The leaders of the Jewish community did not doubt that Peter and John had performed a notable miracle when they healed the lame man at the temple; rather, they sought to mute the sign’s impact by threats of violence (cf. ).
Application: (13-17)

But if they take things out of context or just link verses together improperly, thy are perverting God’s word. And to stop from being controlled, you must know your Bible, know God’s true word. And know how to use the Bible and apply it. You ave to know what the Bible is and more importantly Who the Bible is about. Thomas Adams states There is nothing contained in the word of God, but God the Word.
Know the True Savior (Jesus)
The false messiah or Antichrist is just that: the opposite of Jesus. He is the opposite of a savior he is one who tries to run everything. He is run by aSatan as Paul says. But we saw Jesus interact with Satan in the Gospels when he is tempted and he cannot be controlled.
We do not have to look for someone else to save us because if you are a Christian, you are saved.
He is the only one that paid the price of his life and made a covenant in His blood to make humans right with God. He is the God incarnate, that humbled himself and took on the form of a man.
Know the True Miracle (Grace)
And that act was done through the Grace of God. In Chapter 2 verse 8-9 the author of Hebrews says For in subjecting everything to him, he left nothing that is not subject to him. As it is, we do not yet see everything subjected to him. 9 But we do see Jesus—made lower than the angels for a short time so that by God’s grace he might taste death for everyone—crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death.
Paul says in verse 15 we ought to be thankful for the grace that God showed us by saving us. The whole Bible is about God and his grace.
Paul Tells Timothy he hath saved us according to his own pourpose and grace which was given in Christ Jesus before the world began -
Puritan Thomas Adams explains that Christ's work on the cross is still in affect and still working today. “The virtue of his merits is not abated, though many hands of faith have taken large portions out of his treasury
“The river of his grace, ‘which makes glad the city of God,’ runs over its banks, though infinite souls have drank hearty draughts, and satisfied their thirst. But because we cannot apprehend this for ourselves of ourselves, therefore he hath promised to send us the ‘Spirit of truth, who will dwell with us,’ , and apply this to us for ever.”
“The river of his grace, ‘which makes glad the city of God,’ runs over its banks, though infinite souls have drank hearty draughts, and satisfied their thirst. But because we cannot apprehend this for ourselves of ourselves, therefore he hath promised to send us the ‘Spirit of truth, who will dwell with us,’ , and apply this to us for ever.
This overflowing amount of grace is yours to drink if you come to the river. We are washed, cleansed and renewed
Conclusion:
Paul sets the stage for the church as to the events that have to happen before the end times. Like the Thessalonians, we are still waiting, but we know that the although the end ties are coming, they are not here yet. We do not need to be impressed by a false messiah or antichrist because we serve the One true God, who warned us of the events.
