Intro

Text -
Acts 19:1–2 NKJV
1 And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”

Background

Paul meets a group of “disciples” in Ephesus
they believde in Jesus Christ
they do not know anything about the Holy Spirit!
These “disciples” were with Apollos, a Jew born in Alexandria (Egypt).
He was mighty in Scriptures.
He was instructed in the way of the Lord
He was fervent in spirit
He taught the things of the Lord accurately
He was an evangelist
He went to Achia, and was endorsed to the saints
Paul meets the disciples of John in Ephesus
they were most likely connected to Apollos
they were all followers of John the Baptist

The Main Point

Have you received the Holy Spirit since you believed? (KJV)
The Holy Spirit is God’s gift to the believer!
Every believer of God is entitled to this gift.
Apparently, there are “believers” in the church who have not yet received their entitlement!

Sermon Points

Why is Paul’s question important?
What is the connection of “faith” and the “baptism of the Holy Spirit”?

Faith is God’s “open door” into your heart!

Faith is our access to God (our most common understanding)
when we believe, all things are possible
when we believe, we are able to see the glory of God (Jesus to Martha)
The reverse is also true - Faith is God’s access to our lives!
when we believe, God is able to do things in our life
Ex. - Jesus COULD NOT do mighty works in Nazareth because of the people’s unbelief
When we believe, God is able to give to us what we need most - the Holy Spirit!

Faith should be complemented with the right knowledge

Notice: the disciples of John have not heard about the coming of the Holy Spirit!
You can only believe what you have heard!
Romans 10:14 NKJV
14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?
Romans 10.
You can only speak what you believe!
2 Corinthians 4:13 NKJV
13 And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed and therefore I spoke,” we also believe and therefore speak,
2 Corinthians
Romans 10:10 NKJV
10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Romans 10:9 NKJV
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
Notice- the disciples “lacked knowledge”. Their understanding of the Scripture was not enough to bring them to the baptism of the Holy Spirit!
You can only RECEIVE what your BELIEVE!
Acts 19:3–6 NKJV
3 And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.” 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.
ACTS 19.
Mark 11:24 NKJV
24 Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.
If you don’t believe in “something” why would God give it to you?
so when you pray, believe that you receive them!

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is for the believer only!

If you believe It, ASK FOR IT, and you will receive It!
Luke 11:13 NKJV
13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
Luke 11:14 NKJV
14 And He was casting out a demon, and it was mute. So it was, when the demon had gone out, that the mute spoke; and the multitudes marveled.
Luke 11:14 NKJV
14 And He was casting out a demon, and it was mute. So it was, when the demon had gone out, that the mute spoke; and the multitudes marveled.
How do I know that I have received the Holy Spirit when I believed?

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a REAL experience!

It is an ACTUAL EXPERIENCE before it is an INTELLECTUAL KNOWLEDGE
the disciples waited for 10 days, and received the baptism!
the thousands of Jews on that day gave witness to their experience

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is POWERFUL experience!

Jesus warned His disciples!
Luke 24:49 NKJV
49 “Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”
Luke 24.
Acts 1:8 NKJV
8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 1.8
The power was demonstrated in their tongue!
they spoke with other tongues
they prophesied!

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a THIRSTING experience!

Once you have received the baptism, you’ll want to experience It again and again!
Ephesians 5:18 NKJV
18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,
Ephesians 5:17 NKJV
17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
Ephesians 5.18
why do people want to get drunk again and again?
Ephesians 5.19-21
Ephesians 5:19–21 NKJV
19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.
being filled with the Holy Spirit makes you happy!
being filled with the Holy Spirit makes your bold/strong!
Being filled with the Holy Spirit makes your thankful to God
Being filled with the Holy Spirit makes you submit to one another in the fear of God!
The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a complete experience with God! You will experience IT in your Body, in your Spirit, and in your Soul!
The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a complete experience with God! You will experience IT in your Body, in your Spirit, and in your Soul!

Conclusion

Have you received the Holy Spirit since you believed?
If you answered NO -
believe and ask God for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit!
If you answered YES -
you can experience the FILLING again and again
THE FILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS AN EXPCLUSIVE PRIVILEGE FOR ALL OF GOD’S CHILDREN!
