Because as we go through this passage in the Bible. Its going to help you follow along and not get lost

Why are your disciples always eating and drinking?” Jesus responded, “Do wedding guests fast while celebrating with the groom? Of course not. But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.” Then Jesus gave them this illustration: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and uses it to patch an old garment. For then the new garment would be ruined, and the new patch wouldn’t even match the old garment. “And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the new wine would burst the wineskins, spilling the wine and ruining the skins. New wine must be stored in new wineskins. But no one who drinks the old wine seems to want the new wine. ‘The old is just fine,’ they say.”

Context

Explain the context

A question is asked “Why do others fast and pray but not your disciples?”

The groups of people asking the question....(Religious). Followers of the old traditions...

Fasting was one of these traditions

What was fasting in the old law?

When you abstain from eating food for a certain period of time

Fast for religious reasons…repentance, seek God, mourning

When you abstain from eating food for a certain period of time

The Law only required fasting on the Day of Atonement (yom kippur)…No working. A day of rest, pray, confess sins, fasting

But as time past many other fast had been added by the Jewish leaders....(Pharisees)

Fasting was deeply mixed into the Jewish culture

The way Jesus acted and His disciples was different

So by the time we reach this passage fasting was an OLD tradition that was now deeply mixed into Jewish culture. It was regarded as a very important practice

This is why they questioned Jesus about his disciples not fasting

Luke 5:30 NASB95

30 The Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling at His disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?”

The pharisees were always questioning Jesus about his method.

Why don’t your disciples fast?

Why don’t they follow the old traditions and wash their hands before they eat?

Why do you eat with tax collectors and sinners?

Why are you working on the sabbath?

The Pharisees were always trying get Jesus to conform

These religious people would always see Jesus and His disciples doing and acting in a way that was different then what they were a custom to

Jesus’ NEW WAY vs old Jewish customs and traditions. THEY DON’T MIX

Jesus’ response

Jesus responds in 3 different ways

First response...They don’t fast because its not time to fast

Remember fasting was often associated with sadness (Sin & Grief)

Fasting was often associated with mourning, sadness, sorrow...

But Jesus is saying it’s not a time to be sad

Being with Jesus is like being at a wedding.

Jesus is the groom and the disciples are His guest

What do you do at a wedding?

You celebrate

You rejoice

You dance

You eat

You laugh

You cry…but joyful tears

The pharisees were trying to put their OLD religion on Jesus and his disciples

Their religion was sad ( Not fun, burdensome, heavy, rules, work)

Religion is burdensome, religion is weighty, its not fun, religion is work

Jesus was saying thats the opposite of what it means to be with me

Life in Christ is full of joy, faith, happiness, freedom, love, peace

That is life in Christ

But

No one goes to a wedding and fast

He goes on to say

But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.”

Jesus is not against fasting

Their will come a day of sadness

And so he is saying on that day…”THEN THEY WILL FAST”

“TAKEN AWAY” refers to the cross

en it will be a time for sadness and sorrow.

But right now they are with me

hen it will be a time for sadness and sorrow.

We know how the story ends but for the disciples that day was tragic

God raised Him from the dead

The disciples were afraid. They thought the enemy won

But that sadness would only last for a moment.

It would only last for 3 days because ...

GOD RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD

JESUS IS ALIVE

right now I am here with them. So its not time for sadness. Its not time for mourning. Its time for Joy because they are with me

DEATH COULD NOT HOLD HIM

THE DEVIL COULD NOT STOP HIM

SIN IS DEFEATED

Romans 10:9 NASB95

9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;

And so now anyone who confesses that Jesus Christ is Lord and believes in his heart that God raised Him from the dead will be saved

So believe!!!

So right now I am here with them. So its not time for sadness. Its not time for mourning. Its time for Joy because they are with me

Thats Jesus’ first response to their question of “Why don’t your disciples fast?”

Overall issue

Jesus goes on to give two more examples of why His disciples don’t fast

This is where I want to focus our attention.

This is where the lesson is

Jesus is about to address an overall issue that the pharisee were not seeing

That they couldn’t understand

And that issue is “YOUR OLD WAYS AND TRADITIONS DO NOT MIX WITH A NEW LIFE IN CHRIST”

Your old life can’t be patched

Luke 5:36 NLT

Then Jesus gave them this illustration: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and uses it to patch an old garment. For then the new garment would be ruined, and the new patch wouldn’t even match the old garment.

35 “But the days will come; and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.”

Jesus uses an illustration, also known as a parable, to make his point

Anyone know the greek word for parable?

A parable was a story with hidden truth

Jesus talks about a NEW piece of garment or clothing and an OLD garment to make his point that the NEW can’t mix with the OLD

So in this parable Jesus talks about a new piece of garment or clothing and an old garment.

To make his point that the old can’t mix with the new

Jesus says....you can't take a piece of something NEW and patch it on something old because it won’t match and you’ll ruin the new clothing

What Jesus was getting at is that His ways of teaching. The NEW life in him. The GOSPEL as we know it is the NEW GARMENT that can’t be patched on the old garments of jewish tradition.

Jesus’ message was the NEW

They had never heard or seen anything like

It confused them. It made them angry

Here are some examples of how Jesus’ teachings were different than the old teachings a traditions of the Jews

The old law said you had to clean your hands before eating or you would become ceremonially unclean

The old law said eating certain foods was bad.......but Jesus’ new teaching said “it’s not what goes into the body that defiles you, it’s what comes out”

but Jesus’ NEW teaching said “it’s not what goes into the body that defiles you, it’s what comes out”

but the new law in Christ said “it’s not what goes into the body that defiles you, it’s what comes out”

The old law said do not commit murder.....but the NEW teaching says “if you have anger in your heart towards your brother you already committed murder”

but the new teaching says “if you have anger in your heart towards your brother you already committed murder”

The old law said do not commit adultery......but the NEW says....lust in your heart...

Jesus was the beginning of something new. A new message that was going away from the old traditions and rules and laws that the Jewish people thought they had to keep in order to be right with God.

but the new says....lust in your heart...

The old said, “an eye for an eye”......But Jesus says...”If someone slaps you on the cheek turn to him the other”

Do you see how Jesus’ life and teachings were so different from the old traditions and customs people were use to?

Jesus’ message is a new start. A new journey. A new beginning away form the old burdens and traditions of the old law

What does that mean for us today?

The same is still true

The same is still true today

The NEW message of Jesus Christ does not mix with the OLD teachings and ways of this world

They don’t match

The world says...

“get rich and get wealthy. Then you’ll really be blessed.”

The world says “get rich and get wealthy. Then you’ll really be blessed.”

But Jesus says what profit a man...

What profit a man...

Instead Jesus says “Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven where nothing can destroy it”

Jesus says. blessed are the rich? NO!...“blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”

The world says “you gotta be tough. You gotta be strong. It’s ok to be a little cocky”

But Jesus says “Blessed are those who are meek (gentle, humble) for they will inherit the earth”

The world says “its ok to fight. Don’t let nobody play you. If you see a fight record it and put it on world starrrrr.”

You see your life before Christ doesn’t need a patch

But Jesus says “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God”

One of the biggest differences in the message of this world and Jesus’ message is

The world says “death is the end”

But Jesus says “this life is temporary....DEATH IS ONLY THE BEGINNING”

the world tells you

You can’t be like the world and be like Jesus

See you can’t be like the world and be like Jesus

The messages don’t match.

The messages don’t match. What they’re saying doesn’t match

you can’t follow the ways of the world and then try to PATCH Jesus on it

You can’t only patch on Jesus on Sunday mornings, Wednesday nights, and Friday nights but then live however you want every other day of the week

You see your life before Christ doesn’t need a patch

It don’t work like that

It doesn’t work like that because your old life doesn’t just need a patch

Your old life doesn’t need a bandaid

Your old life doesn’t just need to be repaired

Your old life needs to be completely REMOVED

Colossians 3:10 NLT

10 Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.

You can’t only patch on Jesus on Sunday mornings, Wednesday nights, and Friday nights but then live however you want every other day of the week

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

Whats important is that you place your faith In Jesus. And let that faith express itself in love.

So how do I do this? It sounds great but how do I put on this new nature?

We don’t need patch work

It don’t work like that

Its like those home remodeling shows

Like where can I buy this fresh new gear? This fresh new nature?

Brand new houses and OLD fixer uppers

Who has it?

We are all fixer uppers

We are all OLD garments

When you put your trust in Jesus the holy spirit comes and lives in the house of your heart and does a whole remodeling job of your life

2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV84

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

Before Christ I was lost

I didn’t need patch work

Jesus didn’t die on the cross for some patch work

He died so that you can have a new life in Him

You can’t buy it because its already been paid for

You see the only way to receive this new nature is by giving your old one to the only person that can take it

1 Peter 2:24 NLT

24 He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed.

You see Jesus already died for you old nature. For your sinful life.

He personally carried our sins in His body on the cross

So if you want this new nature. If you want to dress like the king. All you have to do is believe in the one who could take your old nature away

So if you want this new nature. And you’re tired of the old. Ask for forgiveness and ask Jesus to help you believe

Luke 5:37–38 NLT

37 “And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the new wine would burst the wineskins, spilling the wine and ruining the skins. 38 New wine must be stored in new wineskins.

Explain the Parable

His teachings, wasn’t just something different because it was new.

I mean it certainly was different from anything that had been spoken or taught.

And it we just went over all that

Now we have Jesus’ third response to the question “Why do other disciples fast and your disciples do not?”

But what separates Jesus’ message. The gospel as we know it. Is not just that its new and different.

Your new life can’t be contained

In this illustration Jesus says new wine can’t be poured into old wineskins.

Wineskins were made from the skins of animal. Usually goat skin

So they would remove all the bones. All the flesh and just leave the skin intact

They would cut off the head and that is what they would use as a spout

This is how they carried wine back in those days

So the issue is that new wine lets off gases (fermentation)

So if you had old skins that have already been used then those skins have already been stretched out to their maximum capacity.

So if you take new wine, that hasn’t let off its gases yet, and put it into these old skins, that are stretched to their maximum.

When the new wine release its gases the old skins would burst.

So Jesus says you can’t do that. He says no one does that. No one puts new wine in old wineskins.

He says instead....”New wine needs to be put in new wineskins”

The point Jesus is making is this. The new wine represents your new life in Christ. The new wine represents the power of the Christian faith.

Jesus is saying this new life can’t be contained inside of your old traditions and your old ways of doing things

The gospel and its message. The cross and it’s power. Jesus and His teachings can’t be contained inside of the old traditions and old ways of doing things

You can’t take the new message of Jesus and fit it into your old life

Notice that when the new wine was mixed with the old wine skins

Ephesians 3:16 NLT

16 I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit.

Not only were the skins ruined but now the new wine was wasted also

And this is true of some of us in here today. You are wasting the potential life you could have in Christ

You come week after week. Sunday after Sunday. Lifegroup after lifegroup

And the new wine. The message of Jesus Christ

but because you are still in those old wineskins the message is wasted in your life

Seed falls on the path

There’s also some of us in here who have this new wine, this new life but we often find ourselves mixing it with our old ways

We try to mix the new with the old

You keep pouring it into old habits

and then we wonder why do we keep struggling in our walk with God?

Why does it seem like I could never get this right

Why am I always messing up?

Why do I always feel depressed?

Because your new life and your old life don’t mix

If you constantly find your skins bursting maybe its because you haven’t been given the new wineskin or the new garment

Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever? And what union can there be between God’s temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God said: “I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

What does one have to do with the other?

What does light have to do with darkness? They don’t go together

The oil and water…no matter how much I tried to mix them

The water and the oil will always seperate they cannot be mixed

oil and water. I tried to mix it. Trying to hand with boys and be close to christ. Trying to be hot and cold. Look what happens over time. The new life will always push away the junk of this world

The new wine will always burst the old wineskins.

And you keep trying to mix them but they cannot go together

You’re trying to hang with your boys …be down....and be close to Christ.

You’re trying hang with your girl. You’re trying to hang with your boyfriend and you guys want to be close all the time but you also trying to be close to Christ

NEW WINE IS FOR NEW WINESKINS

Trying to be hot and cold.

Romans 12:1–2 NLT

1 And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Let your new life in christ…that new wine....BURST the old skins of your old life

NEW WINE IS FOR NEW WINESKINS

THIS NEW LIFE IN CHRIST IS FOR NEW HEARTS DEVOTED TO HIM

The new life always pushes away the junk of this world

It can’t be contained in the old ways of our lives

Let the new life push away the old wineskins of your life like the water pushing away the oil

You see the the religious leaders were trying to get Jesus and His disciples to follow their old ways and their old laws

The old wineskin couldn’t handle the NEW wine

You see the world is trying to get everyone to follow the way the the world thinks.

Its trying to get all of us to conform or follow the worlds culture

the worlds lifestyle

the worlds customs

The worlds way of doing things

And the sad part is that many of us are falling for it

Ways we conform to the world

Even though we may be saved....your music is not

You come on Sunday and you sing worship music

They wanted them to copy their behavior

And thats what the world does also.

You sing these songs…but once you leave and all week you bumpin lil baby, Kodiac black, Tekashi 69, Travis Scott, 21 savage

The world wants to control the way we speak, the way we act, it wants to control the way you think

But the problem is what we have been saying all night. The way the world thinks is not the way Jesus thinks

And so Paul says v2 - Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world

But let GOD transform you into a new person (A new Garment....New wineskin)…NOT PATCH WORK

How?....By changing the way you THINK!

Meaning you have to let God transform you from the inside out.

And then you will learn what Gods will is

And these people become your influencers

And then you will learn what gods will is

Just like the last point…you need a whole new nature but why?

In the end their are people who are a custom to drinking the old wine.

Luke 5:39 NLT

But no one who drinks the old wine seems to want the new wine. ‘The old is just fine,’ they say.”

There are people who hear this but they are use to the things of the world.

Following its ways

Its thinking

Its traditions and customs

and they don’t want to to change because They love the things of the world

1 John 2:15–16 NLT

Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world.

If you love the things of this world the new wine is not in you

The pharisees and these religious leaders loved there old traditions and old laws and their old ways. And so they refused to change

And so they refused to change

Because they were satisfied.....”THE OLD IS GOOD ENOUGH”....”THE OLD IS JUST FINE”

And maybe there are some of you in here saying that same thing.

I’m good with where I’m at in my life

The reason that is is because you haven’t tasted of the new wine

You haven’t walked in the clothing of righteousness

Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!

The old is good enough for me.

So if you’re tired of your old life. You’re tired of putting patches on

But maybe there are some in here who are tired of their old life

Maybe you’re tired of trying to put patches on your old life

You come week after week

You’re hearing the new wine but you’re stuck in your old wineskins

You’re hearing the new wine. The Gospel but you’re stuck in your old wineskins

Maybe thats you

Or maybe there are some of you in here who have recieved this new wine but you keep finding yourself mixing it with the old ways in your life

Maybe you’re struggling in a relationship

Maybe you’re battling depression

Maybe your giving into peer pressure

Maybe you’re battling depression

Maybe thats you and you find yourself wasting the new wine.

Maybe your giving into peer pressure

The point is that you find yourself wasting this new wine.

Closing

So what can we do? So how do I do this? It sounds great but how do I put on this new nature?

Who has it?

What Christ is offering you is new. Not old stuff.

A brand new garment not patch work.

The heart is deceitful above all things,

New wine with NEW WINESKINS

and desperately sick;

You need to give something up. How do you recieve the new garment?give up the new one

But....You need to give something up.

You receive the new garments when you give up the old ones

who can understand it?

You receive the new wine when you give up your old wineskins

How to receuve the new wine give up your old winskins.

So if you want this new nature. And you’re tired of the old. Ask for forgiveness and ask Jesus to help you believe

In order to receive this new life in christ you have to see there is no need for the old
