Certainly there was confusion about what God really wanted from the people. Don’t we get confused sometimes to? We think that God wants certain things from us, but we don’t really realize what he cares most about. This verse is a capsule of what is in God’s Heart. The first two things have to do with the way we treat each other and they are extremely important, but the last part of the verse is different because it reveals God’s desire to be in a relationship with us. He does not just want to us to be good people, and treat others with justice and kindness, He wants more than that. He wants a personal relationship with you. Today we are going to explore this requirement that God has, “to walk humbly with Him.”
The first thing i want to note is that Walking is a natural action. We don’t think of putting one heel down, and then the rest of the foot. We do not think to lift up the other foot at a certain height and place it at a balancing distance with the other foot. We do not think of all of the details, and all the muscles and bones we have to move in order to walk because walking is natural. Walking with God is something that should be natural too, in other words it is not something that needs to be forced, it is not something you have to desperately try to do, it is not something for which you have to change everything in order for you to.
Sometimes we think we have to do certain things, that we make him happy with us before we can spend time with him. It should be like walking. You see the enemy will do whatever possible to make you feel like walking with God is impossible, like walking with God requires too much, like walking with God is difficult. Walking with God should be natural.
What God wants is to have a natural relationship with Him, he does not want someone else to shove you to him and force you, God wants to have a relation
Just like we all learned how to walk when we were babies, and how there was a natural progression, it did not require much effort, it was something that did because we saw others do. It came like second nature. God created us to be for him and his image, sin distorted that image and walking became difficult, Jesus comes and gets rid of sin, and now we can walk naturally again.
Now walking may be very natural when we recognize that we are re-born. Unfortunately, the requirement God has goes beyond just walking, it is walking humbly. Many can walk, but not many can walk humbly. Walking should be our goal. But what does the verse refer too, walking humbly towards others or walking humbly with God. Well, I think the answer is both. You see doing Justice and loving requires a great deal of humility. The scriptures constantly talks about the dangers of pride and arrogance, and commends the humble. You might recall Paul, a person who had dual-citizenship, spoke multiple languages, could read and write, was educated than most people in his time, and whom Jesus showed up to personally to choose him as an instrument for all the gentiles, Paul who wrote 13 books of the New Testament, and spoke to rulers and authorities. This is what he wrote to the Philippians,
3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves.
4 Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others.
I mean just look at who was saying these words, if anyone had a reason to boast and be proud it was probably Paul, but he constantly kept himself in check.
Walking humbly also refers to walking humbly with God. Look at this word for humility covers in the Hebrew: to be humble, clear, pure, cautious, careful, reasonable, attentive, deliberate.
