Author is making two statements in verse 19-21.
We have confidence to enter the holy places.
We have a great high priest.
Well into this letter… they author has been leading up to this.
A real danger here is that we hear this amazing statement through the ears of a 21st century gentile instead of a 1st century Jew.
These fact in scripture can become for us something bible drills are made of and not true stories that tell us about out relationship with God.
It is important that we understand the full weight of what the author is referring to.
Need to go back and trace this line of thought THROUGH THE PERSPECTIVE OF A 1ST CENTURY JEW!!!!
The OLD TESTAMENT show a series of covenant that God made with various people.
The covenant didn’t erase the old one, but built on it.
And it starts in garden of eden.
God first promised redemption in Eden
Then came promise (covenant) to Noah
Then covenant with Abraham
Then covenant with Moses
Through Moses, God gave them a different kind of access to Him.
This was the ONLY access to God that they knew!!!
That is where we are in Chapter 9.
Review Gen 9
They had a place they could go to access God.
Not personally, but through a mediator.
Was a physical barrier to God
Only the high priest could enter
Only once per year
Only with blood sacrifice for himself and others
This was the ONLY access they knew to God.
I imagine how hearing thus must have made them feel.
This gave them their identity.
This temple and this access to God is what set them apart from every other nation or religion on earth.
BUT WHEN CHRIST APPEARED!!!!
Jesus is the high priest
There is a greater and more perfect tent.
…Thus securing eternal redemption.
This is a THICK line drawn where the old covenant has changed!
What are the repercussions of this change?
There is no pilgrimage they can take to find God.
There is no power in creation that can destroy this temple.
As the dust clears from this monumental statement a reality come evident.
If Jesus isn’t who you say He is, then this all falls apart.
So to secure their confidence in Christ, the next chapter we read.
We.
Have.
Been.
Sanctified.Once.And.For.All!!!!!!
With that perspective lets look agin at verse 19.
We have confidence to enter...
We off all people can enter into the most holy place.
We cannot gain access all on our own.
Christ is our access.
Christ is our mediator.
Our entire relationship with God and our only hope of redemption is through Christ!
Because these two things are true...
Let Us …
Draw near with a true heart.
In full assurance of our faith
With our heart sprinkled clean from an evil conscience.
our bodies washed with pure water
Hold Fast the confession of our hope
Without wavering
For He who promised is faithful
Consider how God has moved throughout history always pursuing the fulfillment of His promise of redemption.
There are so many things that we count one and deep down worry if they will fall through.
God will not fail you!!
Consider how to stir up one another in love and good works
While we are called to live out our own faith, we are also called to support the spiritual walk of our brothers and sisters.
You are responsible for the growth of your church family.
Meet together (get involved.
Make church a priority)
Encourage – Pray over one another and look for encouraging things to share or say to each other.
