• Problem of divisions

• Coming out of the membership

• Who are acting in light of their sin nature

Big Picture

• Must understand the condition of the recipient: 1) Their position--"In Christ"--1:1-9; 2) Their conduct: a) Carnal--3:1, 3--the sin nature dominates their decisions and actions; b) Babes--3:1--the idea of lack of maturity (growth)

• The theme--problems arising from carnality

Control

• Control of sinful desires hinders maturity (growth)

• Control of the Holy Spirit (spirituality) aides in maturity

The problem of dissension (disunity)—1:10-4:21 (first problem in the letter)

• Problem stated—1:10-12

• The correction they need—1:10 “speak (think) the same thing”

• The 10-fold solution—1:13-4:21 (oneness—“only one”)

1. His person—1:13

2. His death—1:13

3. The message of the cross—1:18

4. The church membership—1:25-31

5. Genuine wisdom—2:6

6. Christian service—3:5

7. Assessment of believers—4:5

8. God’s grace—4:7

9. Paul’s example—4:15-17

10. Their choice—4:21

All argues for a church in harmony.
