Genesis 18:16–21 ESV
16 Then the men set out from there, and they looked down toward Sodom. And Abraham went with them to set them on their way. 17 The Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, 18 seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? 19 For I have chosen him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.” 20 Then the Lord said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave, 21 I will go down to see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry that has come to me. And if not, I will know.”
What would have happened if God hid the upcoming judgement of Sodom from Abraham?
The Lesson in Justice would be lost
What is God’s goal in revealing His plan to Abraham?
Abraham will show that he cares for the lost. (He rescued them! Gen 14:16)
Abraham will intercede for the wicked alongside the righteous.
Abraham will, in faith, submit to God’s will.
Genesis 18:22–26 ESV
22 So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord. 23 Then Abraham drew near and said, “Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24 Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?” 26 And the Lord said, “If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”
What are we witnessing here? PRAYER
Types of prayer are: Confession/Thanksgiving/Supplication & Intercession
What does prayer accomplish?
Exodus 14 - Moses cries out to God and God splits the Red Sea
Exodus 17 - Moses cries out to God and God provides water from rock
Joshua 10 - Joshua leads Israel against God’s enemies and against wickedness. He prays for more time and God stops the sun and moon in the sky
1 Samuel 1 - Hannah is barren and is blessed with a son through Prayer
1 Kings 3 - Solomon prays for wisdom
Daniel 9 - Daniel prays for what has already been prophesied to happen, and at the moment he prays God acts!
Intercession is to position yourself between the one in need and the one who can provide for the need.
Intercessory Prayer is:
Personal
Purposeful
Pleading
Particular
Persistent
Genesis 18:27–33 ESV
27 Abraham answered and said, “Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. 28 Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking. Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?” And he said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.” 29 Again he spoke to him and said, “Suppose forty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of forty I will not do it.” 30 Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there.” He answered, “I will not do it, if I find thirty there.” 31 He said, “Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it.” 32 Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.” 33 And the Lord went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.
Abraham fulfills these intercessory guidelines.
Praying for a monetary need:
Personal - Come to God as His beloved child and with the understanding that He alone has provided for all you need
Purposeful - Dedicate time to praying for God to meet this need
Pleading - Pray that God meet the need according to His promise to care for His sons and daughters even more greatly than how He cares for birds of the air and lilies of the field Matt 6:25-34
Particular - Tell God the amount that is needed and/or that the needed amount be reduced to something manageable.
Persistent - Every time the need causes difficulty
Praying for a health need
Personal - Set yourself before God as one who knows that whether you live or die you belong to Him and His kingdom forever
Purposeful - Seek for God to provide the complete healing that only He can
Pleading - Pray as the leper of Luke 5:12 “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.”
Particular - Ask for God to provide through an upcoming appointment and in a way that He gets glory.
Persistent - Pray on a faithful, daily schedule for healing.
Praying for someone’s salvation
Personal - Present to God a friend or family member of yours remembering that God loves them even more than you do.
Purposeful - Pray for life-changing salvation
Pleading - Pray as Paul exhorts the Ephesians. Eph 3:17-19 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Particular - Pray for upcoming times where you know you will see them and be able to share salvation with them.
Persistent - Add them to your list!
