3. SIMBOOL OF DEMENSTRASIE
Symbolism and Reality.
It is important to observe that Paul never refers to baptism as a purely external rite, whether as a “mere symbol” for confessing faith in Christ, or as a rite that effects
what it symbolizes.
Admittedly for Paul, as for the whole early church, the symbolic nature of baptism is plain.
Most obviously it symbolizes cleansing from sin (cf.
Handelinge 22:16)[1]
Kolossense 2:10–12 (AFRIKAAN)
4. BEKLEE JOU MET CHRISTUS
The actions of stripping off clothes for baptism and putting on clothes after baptism affords a symbol of “putting off” the old life without Christ and “putting on” the new life in Christ, and even putting on Christ himself (; , ).[2]
5. ONDERDOMPELING
The sinking of the baptized beneath water and rising out of it vividly symbolizes sharing in Christ’s burial and resurrection (; the baptismal actions lie in the background of , often regarded by interpreters as a baptismal chant addressed to the newly initiated believers: see commentaries).[3]
6. VERVANG NIE WAT JESUS GEDOEN HET NIE
None of these spiritual realities, however, can be said to happen by the mere performance of appropriate symbolic actions; they depend on God’s once-for-all Handelinge in Christ, according to the gospel, and on God’s action in believers as they respond to God’s call in the gospel[4]
7. DIE OPDRAG
Handelinge 2:38 (AFRIKAAN)
