What Christ Did Not Say...

Many times we assume that Christ said something when He did not say it...
He did not say...

Give All Your Money To The Church

A lot of people think that the church just wants your money. Some are that way.
Some are that way.
God warns us about making the Church about money and wealth...
:
James 2:1-4
1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.
2 For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;
3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:
4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?
This was a widow = this choice did not mean that she was causing her family to starve.
As a husband and father with children living at home, I cannot choose to ignore our needs and do what this lady did. God’s Word gives me certain responsibilities as a husband and father.

God Hates The Wealthy

Just because you have wealth does not mean that God loves or hates you.
Wealth compared to who?
1 Timothy 6:17-19
17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;
19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
Be humble
Don’t trust in Riches

Make The Wealthy Pay So The Poor Don’t Have To.

There are a lot of people talking about the rich should pay extra to take care of those who don’t have as much money just because they are rich…this is not right.
Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.
:26 Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.
Now, throughout Scripture we see believers helping one another and that is WONDERFUL!!! But we must remember to follow Bible limits, even when helping.
26 Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.
2 Thessalonians 3:10-12
2 Thessalonians 3:10-12
10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.
12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.
We must understand the difference between NEEDS and WANTS!
I need clothes, but I don’t need the best clothes. I want those.
I need food, but I don’t need to eat steak from Australia. I want that.
I need a place to live, but I don’t need a house with
We should help with needs, but I am not obligated to help you with your wants.

What Was Christ Actually Saying?

Do You Love God?

Christ could do something that I cannot do, see hearts. He could see the hearts of the rich AND of this poor woman too.
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Many people don’t give to God because of their own desires...
This widow lady had needs, but Christ knew that she had given ALL she had.
It is not a question of how much you give to God, but how much you hold back from Him!!! In this context of loving God, I’m not asking you to give all your money in the offering…I’m asking if God has you? Is your money more important than God?
There is no verse in the NT that explicitly commands a tithe, but throughout the OT, that was common. In the NT, we see Paul carries the principle over in

9 For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?
10 Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.
11 If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?
12 If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.
13 Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?
14 Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

Number 18:21 And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.
My personal heart check is to ask if God gets the most of my paycheck?
21 And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.
My personal heart check is to ask if God gets the most of my paycheck?
Does He get the most of my time? Worship, Devotions, witnessing, etc.
Does He get a Tithe of my time?

God Measures What Is NOT His

Though the rich gave more, their hearts were far from God.
Though she gave next to nothing, the widow gave all she had and it was an outward reflection that she had given God everything already.
15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:
17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?
18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.
The point of this story by Christ is not to say, “Don’t plan and work hard.” The point is to not make this earthly life the focus and goal of your life without regard to what God wants!

Conclusion:
Where is your heart today? This can often be answered by looking at where your money goes every month.
