      6.  Fully Assured

To be Justified by Faith… Luther’s mutterings

NAU Romans 1:17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "BUT THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH."

è First five captures speak to unbelievers… an apologetic… discussion of faith… valuable to both…

è Next chapters speak to the believer specifically…

Therefore…

Biblical:

NAU Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; 5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. 6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11 And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

Body:

The Believer’s Peace with God

Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

  • The first link in this unbreakable chain that eternally binds the believer to God to be at peace…
  • Peace in the present tense…
  • Not the yet to be realized…
  • Justified… by Faith… at Peace…
  • Not in Christ… no peace
  • Know Christ… Know Peace…

  • At War… whether you are on the front line or not
    • Challenges
    • Uncertainty
    • Instability
  • NAU Ephesians 5:5 For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.
  • No Neutral… for or against!
  • But with Christ…
  • A Sinner’s War with God is ended for eternity…
    • Celebration!!
  • That is Peace!
  • Peace in our heart
  • Peace in the conflict
  • Peace in our relationship
  • NAU Colossians 1:19 For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, 20 and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven. 21 And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, 22 yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach—
  • Peace secure in God alone…

The Believer’s Peace with God

  • Security comes not in a relationship in the past…
  • But in the Recognition of the Awesomeness of God and our relationship for eternity….

The Believer’s Standing in Grace

2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand;

  • The second link in this unbreakable chain that eternally binds the believer to God is Grace
  • Our Security lies in our access to God through Christ
  • The unmerited favour of God… if made peace in the past… grace present and ongoing
    • NAU Hebrews 7:25 Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.
  • In God’s grace through cost…
  • NAU Ephesians 2:18 for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.
  • No Peace… at war… no grace… no relationship
  • Through Christ and by God’s grace the war is over… and we can stand in the presence of our God
  • Talking about that relationship… Jeremiah wrote of the New Covenant to come in Christ…
  • NAU Jeremiah 32:38 "They shall be My people, and I will be their God; 39 and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me always, for their own good and for the good of their children after them. 40 "I will make an everlasting covenant with them that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; and I will put the fear of Me in their hearts so that they will not turn away from Me.”

    • God has poured out his favour
    • Has branded our hearts with his Spirit
    • Has brought us into perfect relationship
    • Has broken our bondage to sin… the chains of death
    • Has through grace redeemed us to a new life in Christ…
    • NAU Romans 6:18 and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.

  • Those justified by faith have Peace… and are in God’s grace    The Believer’s Standing in Grace
  • Security comes not in a relationship in the past…
  •  But in the Recognition of the Awesomeness of God and our relationship for eternity….

The Believer’s Hope of Glory

2b and we exult in hope of the glory of God.

3 And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; 5 and hope does not disappoint,

  •  The third link in the unbreakable chain that eternally binds us to Christ and eternally binds believers to Christ and gives them reason to exult is their hope of the glory of God.
  •  From Peace… to Grace… and promise to be clothed in the glory of Christ…
    •  NAU John 17:22 "The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one;
  • Not our glory… but the glory of Christ given those who trust in him…
  •  We can barely grasp the nature of the glory of God… and yet that which we can not grasp… we will one day partake in… NAU 2 Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.

  • Our security is wrapped up in the fact that we are at Peace with God… living in his Grace… and with the Promise of the Glory of Christ to come!
  •    And even though we will face trial and tribulations… we also exult in our tribulations (like Job… root word to press like grapes or toothpaste)
  •  We know the ending…
  • This is conditioning…
    • knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; 5 and hope does not disappoint
  • Not our glory… but the glory of Christ given those who trust in him…

The Believer’s Hope of Glory

  •  Security comes not in a relationship in the past…
  •  But in the Recognition of the Awesomeness of God and our relationship for eternity….

The Believer’s Possession of Divine Love

5b because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. 6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

  •  The fourth link in this unbreakable chain that eternally binds the believer to God is Possession of Divine Love … that has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit
  •  Not our love of God but His love of us…
  •  NAU John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
  • Not only did He love us enough to send His Son… for those who believe… He pours it into our hearts and lives through the Holy Spirit
  • Salvation we not only know but experience in a vital and dynamic way… the love of God… reigning in us… the Holy Spirit.
  •  Kid’s… loving them when they do well (Unconditional)
  • Loving them in spite of what they do (Conditional) (hockey)
  • For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly… not about deserving... about love…
  • NAU Ephesians 3:14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.
  • We want to live the reality of the Divine love we possess.

The Believer’s Possession of Divine Love

  • Security comes not in a relationship in the past…
  •  But in the Recognition of the Awesomeness of God and our relationship for eternity….
  •

The Believer’s Certainty of Deliverance

9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

  •  The fifth link in this unbreakable chain that eternally binds the believer to God is our certainty of deliverance
  • Much more then incredibly significant… even in the light of what was said… pay attention to this…
  •  We have been reconciled to God…
    • Delivered from the appropriate penalty…
    • We have been JUSTIFIED!!
  •  Not only have we been delivered from sin and death… but uncertainty… we have been delivered… delivered from sin… by grace… delivered to new life in Christ through his blood… justified not in our selves but by faith from God in Christ!!
  •  NAU Ephesians 2:3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
  • But know we are redeemed…set free… delivered in Christ!!
  •  The proof is in the promise…
  • God promises us new life in Christ…
  • Then in Christ we shall be delivered!

The Believer’s Certainty of Deliverance

  •  Security comes not in a relationship in the past…
  •  But in the Recognition of the Awesomeness of God and our relationship for eternity….

The Believer’s Joy in God

11 And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

  • The six link in this unbreakable chain that eternally binds the believer to God their joy… our joy… our great exultation of God
  • NAU Psalm 34:3 O magnify the LORD with me, And let us exalt His name together.
  • Sing for Joy the awesomeness of our God
  • Sing for Joy as his Children
  • Sing for Joy as the choir of the redeemed
    • O for a thousand tongues to sing
      My great Redeemer’s praise,
The glories of my God and King,
      The triumphs of His grace!
    •  Hear Him, ye deaf; His praise, ye dumb,
      Your loosened tongues employ;
Ye blind, behold your Savoir come,
And leap, ye lame, for joy.

 The Believer’s Joy in God

  •  Security comes not in a relationship in the past… *  But in the Recognition of the Awesomeness of God and our relationship for eternity….
