Introduction
Only Cass and Ray could some how have dueling preachers at their wedding.
And I had a really good thing going here with weddings, where I just wrote one sermon and used it for everyone’s wedding on the assumption that I could get away with it.
So…thanks for that.
But Ray and Cass invited me to come and speak about the Gospel today, and I must say this is an incredibly high honor.
But all the same, today when Ray and Cass asked if I would speak to this faith that we share together, this Gospel that we hold to so tightly, they ultimately asked me to speak about love.
And I could imagine that there are a few different types of people here today.
God loves Jesus.
Some of us might hear “The Gospel,” and we get super excited, kind of like when our favorite band plays our favorite song at a concert.
Some of us might hear “The Gospel,” and start looking for the exit.
Jesus loves us.
Maybe that comes as a surprise to you.
Maybe you have grown up knowing only a church that is about condemnation.
Maybe you have grown up knowing only a church that is critical.
Maybe you have grown up knowing only a church that says you’re not good enough.
But listen to the things that Jesus has to say to us about what the Gospel message is here in this passage:
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
This is a gift you already have, just stay home.
The way we love one another shows the world Christ’s love.
Ray and Cass, this is your wedding.
But it’s really all of ours.
