What are some of your goals for the next 10 Years?

Anyone say “lose a really close friend or loved one”?
How about “struggle finding a job and struggle to pay your bills”?
Anyone think “I am planning on getting cancer or injured in some way that my future is really in question?”
Broken relationships, job loss, infertility...

Why are those things not on our goals lists?

Because we have high expectation for our lives- which is not a bad thing.
But we also have presumptions for our lives- which can be damaging.

The Story of Job

Job 1:1–3 NIV
1 In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. 2 He had seven sons and three daughters, 3 and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.
Job was a good man. Feared God, turned away from evil, blameless and upright.
Job was a wealthy man. Lots of sheep, camels, oxen, donkeys, and servants
Job was a blessed man, with a wife, 7 sons, and 3 daughters.
Job must have been doing everything right....

Job 1:6–12 NIV
6 One day the angels came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them. 7 The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.” 8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.” 9 “Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. 10 “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. 11 But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.” 12 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

Was it God’s Will for Job’s life to be destroyed?
Yes
Why?
We learn much later in the book of Job that God’s desire for Job is for him to TRUST THE LORD.
Even when life seems to be against us, when or seem like they are not for us. Remember the words of God to Job.
Job 38:4–11 NIV
4 “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. 5 Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? 6 On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone— 7 while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy? 8 “Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb, 9 when I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness, 10 when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place, 11 when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt’?
job 38 4-
He goes on for 2 chapters, and then...
job 40 1
Job 40:1–2 NLT
1 Then the Lord said to Job, 2 “Do you still want to argue with the Almighty? You are God’s critic, but do you have the answers?”
and Job
Job 40:4 NLT
4 “I am nothing—how could I ever find the answers? I will cover my mouth with my hand.
job 40:
Job wasn’t critical of God at first
Job 1:20–21 ESV
20 Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”
He trusted God and worshipped Him
But at time went on, and accusers came and Job’s suffering led him to ask questions.
God’s answer is simply “I know what I am doing.”
