opening questions

have you ever followed advice that sounded really good but turned out to be bad? (eating full bags of chips before soccer practice; krispy kreme eating contests)
would you rather find out that you’ve been lied to by your friend or never realize that your friend is a liar? (finding out that a friend lied to you hurts, it feels like they’ve betrayed you; not knowing they’re a liar might feel better for a while because we’re being kept from that pain of knowing, but it will ultimately hurt us in the long run because we’re never hearing the truth)

Scripture

Can someone tell me which book of the Bible is heavily focused on wisdom? (Proverbs)
So in the passage in Proverbs we’re going to read, heavenly wisdom and earthly wisdom are portrayed as 2 characters: Lady Wisdom and Lady Folly. (fun to say in British accent)
(listen to how lady wisdom and lady folly are contrasted in this passage)

Wisdom has built her house;

she has hewn her seven pillars.

2  She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mixed her wine;

she has also set her table.

3  She has sent out her young women to call

from the highest places in the town,

4  “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!”

To him who lacks sense she says,

5  “Come, eat of my bread

and drink of the wine I have mixed.

6  Leave your simple ways, and live,

and walk in the way of insight.”

7  Whoever corrects a scoffer gets himself abuse,

and he who reproves a wicked man incurs injury.

8  Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you;

reprove a wise man, and he will love you.

9  Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser;

teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

10  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,

and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

11  For by me your days will be multiplied,

and years will be added to your life.

12  If you are wise, you are wise for yourself;

if you scoff, you alone will bear it.

The Way of Folly

13  The woman Folly is loud;

she is seductive and knows nothing.

14  She sits at the door of her house;

she takes a seat on the highest places of the town,

15  calling to those who pass by,

who are going straight on their way,

16  “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!”

And to him who lacks sense she says,

17  “Stolen water is sweet,

and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.”

18  But he does not know that the dead are there,

that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

Do you see any big differences right off the bat?
Lady Wisdom is a beautiful example. She does what she is supposed to, she seeks out others and invites them into her home to learn from her.
Lady Folly is a cheap imitation of Lady Wisdom, mimicking wisdom just enough to trick her victims. (Ex. At school, they had this cereal dispenser that said it was cinnamon toast crunch. The cereal inside looked like cinnamon toast crunch. Everything looked right. But then I started to eat it and realized it wasn’t actually cinnamon toast crunch, it was golden grahams. It mimicked cinnamon toast crunch just enough to trick me)
1 Corinthians tells us that Jesus Christ is the wisdom of God, and a major difference between lady wisdom and lady folly is that only one of them acts like Jesus.
When Jesus walked the earth, he actively sought out anyone who was hungry for truth and invited them to learn in his presence, offering correction, truth, and life. And he still does that today through the Holy Spirit. We only have to have faith in him and a teachable spirit in order to receive his wisdom. This is like lady wisdom.
Lady folly, on the other hand, or earthly wisdom, is much harsher. It shows the ways that Satan mimics the good things of God. Does lady folly leave her house to seek anyone out like lady wisdom did? (No) What did she do instead? (she sits at the door of her house and yells) She’s lazy. She doesn’t bother to seek anyone out but calls out from her doorway instead.
If you heard some random stranger yelling at you “hey come on in my house!” you’re probably way less likely to go in versus the person who comes up to you, gets to know you, treats you kindly, then invites you in. (Don’t ever go into a stranger’s house kids or you’ll end up like that hansel and gretel story)
But lady folly is lazy, and she even copies the words of lady wisdom. She uses the same invitation to trick victims into thinking she’s something that she’s not. However, while lady wisdom’s advice leads to life, lady folly’s advice leads to death and isolation. She encourages secrecy and sin, which is so easy for us to fall into if we aren’t relying on Christ to teach us, guide us, and correct us.

another perspective

Jamie Martin is a master at detecting fakes and forgeries. He uses microscopes and cameras and scans everything from paintings to statues to other art in order to detect forgeries.
One painting was supposed to have been created in the 1930s, but he found a piece of string embedded in the paint from a fabric that didn’t exist until 1958.
Another painting contained a type of paint that wasn’t created until after the real artist’s death.
Following these clues, this guy has uncovered over $80 million worth of forged art. Even the most realistic and sophisticated forgeries were no match for Martin’s wisdom and discernment in that area.
Earthly wisdom can be a lot like that forged art. It often looks good and real, but when we take time to really think about it and pay attention to what theBible says about it, things aren’t as good as they seem.
A friend’s advice may sound smart, but if it goes against what your parents would say for example, it’s worth taking a step back and asking yourself who has more wisdom in that situation- your friend or your parents? If you’re having to hide something from other people, you probably shouldn’t be doing it in the first place.
And like we talked about a couple weeks ago and y’all saw when the leaders came on stage and tried to answer some tough questions, age and experience do not automatically make someone wiser. But listening to wise teachers is important. Jame Martin didn’t become a master detective overnight. He has spent 4 decades studying science, art history, forensics, painting, and more to become a master at what he does.
True wisdom starts with admitting how little we actually know and how much we need God’s help. And the good news is that once we admit that, God’s wisdom is available to anyone who seeks it. As you get to know Jesus better, as you spend more time with him, you’ll gain more wisdom and you’ll be able to spot the differences between wisdom and folly in your own everyday life.

Activity

We’re going to do an activity that demonstrates the importance of building something that doesn’t just look strong but actually is strong. Just like we need the foundation of God’s wisdom in our lives that actually is strong rather than a foundation of earthly wisdom that may look good but crumbles under pressure.
Build a structure using spaghetti and marshmallows. They have to be able to hold up a stack of books.
10 minutes.
See which is the strongest.
Was this activity easier or harder than you thought?
Were you surprised by which structure was the strongest vs the one that looked the strongest?
How is earthly wisdom like the structure that only looks strong but isn’t really strong?
How can you build a strong foundation on God’s wisdom that helps you stand up under the pressure you face every day?
