Three essentials for Confident Christians
I. They abide in ____________ (2:28-29).
A. Abide in Him!
1. Abide = remain, live (John 15:4-11)
2. In Him = to remain in fellowship with Jesus;
B. Reasons to abide
1. To insure confidence at His coming (28)
a. Believers will be rewarded (Col 3:4; 1 Pet 5:4)
b. Faithful believers will be unashamed
(Isa 1:28-29; 1 John 4:17).
2. To assure one’s salvation (29).
a. Abiders in the Righteous One live righteously
(1 John 1:6-7; 2:1; 2 Cor 5:21; Rev 22:11).
b. Righteous doers are born of God (1 John 5:18).
II. They advance in ____________ (3:1-3).
A. Believers are children of God by love (John 1:11-13).
B. God’s children are to know three things (3:1b-2).
1. The world does not understand them
(John 15:18-21)
2. They know they will be like Jesus
(1 Cor 15:53; Rom 8:23; Eph 5:5:27; Phil 3:21).
3. They will see Him as He is
(Matt 17:1-2; John 17:24).
C. Hope brings purity (3).
1. They hope on Him (Acts 24:15).
2. They purify themselves (James 4:8; 1 Pet 1:22).
III. They avoid ______________ (3:4-10).
A. There are three reasons not to sin (4-6).
1. Sin is lawlessness (2 Thess 2:3, 7; Titus 2:14).
2. Jesus took away sins (John 1:29).
3. No one who abides in Him sins (1 John 1:6).
B. Deceivers are characterized by sin (7-10).
1. Let no one deceive you (7a).
2. Note the distinction (7b-8a).
a. Righteous doers are righteous (7b).
b. One who practices sin is of the devil (8a).
i. Habitual sinners (1 Cor 6:9-11)
ii. Devil’s children (John 8:44)
3. One who practices sin is not born of God (9).
a. The regenerated cannot willingly practice sin
(1 John 5:1).
b. Two reasons why they cannot live in sin:
i. God’s nature abides in them (2 Pet 1:4).
ii. They are regenerated
(John 3:3, 7; 2 Cor 5:17).
4. Therefore, one who does not practice righteousness is not of God (10a).
a. Righteousness is a characteristic God’s child
(1 John 1:7).
b. Sin is a characteristic of one of the devil.
c. One who hates his brother is not God’s child.
