And this shall be the sign to us.”

1 Samuel 14:13 ESV
13 Then Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, and his armor-bearer after him. And they fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer killed them after him.

1 Samuel 14:18–19 ESV
18 So Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring the ark of God here.” For the ark of God went at that time with the people of Israel. 19 Now while Saul was talking to the priest, the tumult in the camp of the Philistines increased more and more. So Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand.”
Philistine VS Philistine = No Jerseys in War…
Hebrews - turncoats… Out of hiding - band waggon warriors

LITERALLY the land flowing with Milk and Honey
Gatorade = replenish physical strength
1 Samuel 14:27 ESV
27 But Jonathan had not heard his father charge the people with the oath, so he put out the tip of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes became bright.

1 Samuel 14:28–30 ESV
28 Then one of the people said, “Your father strictly charged the people with an oath, saying, ‘Cursed be the man who eats food this day.’ ” And the people were faint. 29 Then Jonathan said, “My father has troubled the land. See how my eyes have become bright because I tasted a little of this honey. 30 How much better if the people had eaten freely today of the spoil of their enemies that they found. For now the defeat among the Philistines has not been great.”
1 Sam 14.
Jonathan = speaks ill of Saul’s decision = not how John would have done this…
1 Samuel 14:25–30 ESV
25 Now when all the people came to the forest, behold, there was honey on the ground. 26 And when the people entered the forest, behold, the honey was dropping, but no one put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath. 27 But Jonathan had not heard his father charge the people with the oath, so he put out the tip of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes became bright.

38 And Saul said, “Come here, all you leaders of the people, and know and see how this sin has arisen today. 39 For as the Lord lives who saves Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die.” But there was not a man among all the people who answered him.
Joshua - Achan = Saul’s Rash Vow

But the people step in...
1 Samuel 14:45 ESV
45 Then the people said to Saul, “Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it! As the Lord lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day.” So the people ransomed Jonathan, so that he did not die.

Remember When We Started…?

How many of you growing up have heard that you were just like your … ?
Good Traits
...
Bad Traits
Elisa’s teeth
Jon’s eyes
For you… “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” … is hurtful
Or … “A chip off the old block”… would make you sick
I want my children to be just like their Father !!
How might Jonathan feel?
I believe that Jesus would say Jonathan was acting in accordance with his father…
Jonathan was not acting like Dad but is acting in accordance with his Father…
Look what Jesus says...
In I hope you will see with clarity these two men
In we have a clear example of the differences and similarities between fathers and sons.
Matthew 23:9 ESV
9 And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.
John 8:39–47 ESV
39 They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, 40 but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. 41 You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. 43 Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. 46 Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? 47 Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.”
Look again at what John says…
Matthew 23:9 ESV
9 And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.
1 John 3:1–2 ESV
1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.
John continues as he says…
1 John 3:9–10 ESV
9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

Makes us ask the question of ourselves...
Are we the apple or the chip?
Are you taking after your first family Adam or your adopted family Jesus
