Fact: Jesus Christ initiates The Lord’s Supper during His last Passover meal. - L Luke 22: 14,15,19-20
Question: Why did Jesus say this cup is the new covenant in My blood?
Answer: He wanted Christians to focus on His cross, His death, and His resurrection and not on the Passover, the Red Sea, and the Exodus.
Three Things Paul Confronts The Corinthian Church With:
I. The Perversion Of The Lord’s Supper. - L v. 18-22
A. The Church had a division. – L v. 18
"Division" indicates a tearing or cutting.
Acts 2:44 Now all who believed were together and had all things in common.
B. Some believers made the Lord’s Supper a mockery. - L v. 21
1) They were selfish. - L v.21a
2) Some were getting drunk. – L v. 21b
Ephesians 6:18 “And do not be drunk with wine… but be filled with the spirit.”
II. The Purpose Of The Lord’s Supper. - L v. 23-26
A. To understand the true value of Christ’s body. - L v. 24
“Bread” represents the whole person of Christ. - L v. John 19:33-36
B. To understand the true value of Christ's Blood. - L v. 25
“The Cup” represents Christ’s blood shed for our sin.
Hebrews 9:28 “Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many…”
I Peter 1: 18,19 “…you were not redeemed with corruptible things like silver and gold but with the precious blood of Christ as a lamb without blemish and without spot.”
C. To remember Christ’s death. – L v. 26
III. The Preparation For The Lord’s Supper. - L v. 27-34
A. Confess your sins.
I John 1:7,9 “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all unrighteousness.”
B. Unconfessed sin makes us unworthy. - L v. 27-29
Romans 8:1 “There is… no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the spirit.”
C. Partaking unworthily brings discipline. - L v. 30-32
“Sleep" is used metaphorically for death. - L John 11:11-14
Question: Why does God discipline us?
Answer: To bring us back to righteous behavior.
I John 5: 16,17 “If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask and he will give life to for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is a sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that. All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin leading to death.”
D. The remedy for the Corinthian Church. - L v. 33, 34
