1 Peter 4:7–19 ESV
7 The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. 8 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. 9 Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: 11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. 14 If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. 16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. 17 For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 And “If the righteous is scarcely saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?” 19 Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.

• Engage: There are no Christian haircuts. No Christian clothes. No Christian telephones. No Christian automobiles. No Christian nations. This little distinction is actually pretty important and remembering it would save us quite a bit of grief, turn aside a lot of anger, and keep us from being so often disappointed.

• Expand: Some facts. The state killed Jesus. The state persecuted the early Church. A "pagan" empire gave way to a "Christian empire." Before the Christian's came to power the pagans confiscated their property and killed them. After the Christian's came to power they confiscated the pagan's property and killed them. Puritan's came to New England to flee the oppressive regime which insisted on one way to worship Jesus. They came to establish a Christian plantation free to worship as they wanted to. When the Roger Williams sought freedom to worship differently from the Puritan norm…they threw him out of the Colony. When the Quakers showed up…they confiscated their property, cut off their ears, or if they were particularly non-compliant-killed them.

▾ A Christian Culture:

Forming a Christian Culture:

• The only place where the lordship of Christ will be fully celebrated is the Church. The only place that should not have mixed motives or allow for cultural compromise is the Church. The only entity given the task of redeeming mankind from Sin and putting our race back into a right relationship with God is the Church.

• We place high hopes on our nation and our culture. Generally we are disappointed. "When a dog urinates on a fire hydrant it's not committing vandalism…it's just being a dog."
• When We love and serve we are being the Church!
• When the world calls us names, shuts us out, holds us in contempt and doubts our sincerity it's just being the world.
• You want a Christian environment? Be in the Church. You want a Christian culture? We have one, right here. If you want to be in constant conflict whilst trying to get the unredeemed to share your values and embrace the name of Jesus…well we have many examples of how that happens.

unredeemed to share your values and embrace the name of Jesus…well we have many examples of how that happens.

• Here, we are not ashamed of Jesus. We embrace His vision, We proclaim His victory, We extend His Kingdom, we love as He loves, go as He went, speak as He spoke. We may be trivialized, marginalized, stigmatized, derided, and ridiculed. We do not heed the world's cat-calls but respond in purposeful, redemptive love. Why not join us?
