1 John 3:4–10 NKJV
4 Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. 5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin. 6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. 8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God. 10 In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother.

It’s Obvious!

I. Righteousness and Lawlessness Don’t Mix (1 John 3:4–8)

Righteousness is a sincere desire to please God by keeping His commands.
Commanded and approved by Him. However, human fallibility means that true righteousness must be the product of the Holy Spirit’s work in the believer.
It involves keeping the laws of God

A. The Practice of the Lawless (v. 4).

1 John 3:4 NKJV
4 Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.
Whoever commits
Commit means to do, to practice,
the usage [present, active, participle] indicates habitual sinning
lawlessness “lawless deed” or “iniquity” to transgress or break God’s law. It is a willful sinning, a deliberate disregard for the law [ATTITUDE] rebellion against God
It involves aligning yourself with the antichrist and Satan in direct rebellion against the HOLY ONE
Sin is the one that misses the mark God has set and ‘the’ lawlessness is that which disregards God’s law

Humanity is Sinful

Romans 3:10–18 NKJV
10 As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one; 11 There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. 12 They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.” 13 “Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit”; “The poison of asps is under their lips”; 14 “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.” 15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways; 17 And the way of peace they have not known.” 18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
1 John 3:8 NKJV
8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.
The act and the attitude toward God and sin
Sin or Lawlessness breeds
. . . disrespect for the holy
. . . disregard for the pure
. . . disdain for the virtuous
. . . disinterest for the blessed
. . . dissatisfaction with the eternal
and . . . disbelief in the heart

God requires righteousness of his people

Isaiah 1:16–17 NKJV
16 “Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; Put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes. Cease to do evil, 17 Learn to do good; Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor; Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow.
Matthew 5:6 NKJV
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.
Matthew 6:33 NKJV
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
