We listen to music.

We watch sports.

We attend movies.

▾ Start:

We are led by politicians.

We are embedded in a culture which celebrates the pursuit of the passions of the flesh.

• Engage: Did you have a hero growing up who died of an OD? Or maybe was a drunk? How about sex, did you ever wonder how some of our cultural icons ever kept their own sexual flings organized?

• Expand: It's easy to condemn modern sensual society. It is not really all that different than the world in which Peter lived or the audience which first heard these words. They did not have the internet or modern marketing but sin was sin. It was big business and it sold. Because when the product you are selling is making someone feel as liberated as God, don't be surprised when it becomes majority opinion!

• Excite: Maybe it's time to flip the script. Maybe it is time for us to surprise the world by living like Jesus, suffering like Him when necessary and living above the savage instincts of modern man.

▾ Body of Sermon:

1 The Will of God. vv. 1-2

▾ 1 The Will of God. vv. 1-2
1 Peter 4:1–2 ESV
1 Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God.

1.1 Preparation.

1.2 Purpose.

2 The Way of the World. vv. 3-4

1 Peter 4:3–4 ESV
3 For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. 4 With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you;
Who we might have been or done in

2.1 the past is in the past.

2.2 The World will react

to the commitments of Christian morality.

They will be surprised by you…

They will malign you…

3 The Warning of the Gospel. vv. 5-6

1 Peter 4:5–6 ESV
5 but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 6 For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.
The Gospel reminds us that

3.1 Everyone answers to our Creator-Judge.

to our Creator-Judge.

3.2 The Gospel reminds us that it makes dead men live through God's Spirit.

Savage Moderns:

▾ Shut Down:
• One of the great myths of the modern world is that advances in our society have elevated moral discourse. Which doesn't exactly explain why 13 year olds might used our advanced technologies to send naked pictures to one another. That is explained by the fact that they see older students do such things. Their parents. The models presented in the media. Our culture now has technological approaches to sensuality, lust, drunkenness, sexual excess, partying and lawless idolatrous behavior.

• All that 20 centuries of ever expanding technology has really given us is selfies with our sin. The gospel warns us away from the way of the world. The gospel may come with suffering but it enables us to pursue with passion the will of God.
