§ What if God couldn't take the time to bless us today because we couldn't take the time to thank Him yesterday?
§ What if God decided to stop leading us tomorrow because we did not follow Him today?
§ What if we never saw another flower bloom because we grumbled when God sent the rain?
§ What if God stopped loving and caring for us because we failed to love and care for others?
§ What if God would not hear us today because we would not listen to Him yesterday?
§ What if God answered our prayers the way we answer His call for service?
§ What if God met our needs the way we give Him our lives?
A. These questions are similar to some of the questions that the people of Israel needed to be asking themselves as Amos preached his message of judgment to them.
B. One of the powerful questions that Amos asks is: CAN TWO WALK TOGETHER EXCEPT THEY BE AGREED?
(Amos 3:3).
C. Walking with God is the ideal of human life.
§ We were made in His image and after His likeness and in agreement with Him.
§ So long as man stayed in close agreement with God, they could walk together.
§ BUT, because of S-I-N, that agreement was destroyed.
§ Hence, the need for the admonition from Paul----2Cor 5:20 (KJS) Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech [you] by us: we pray [you] in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.
§ The people of Israel needed Amos to challenge them to think about their WALK and we also can benefit from that same challenge.
D. Their WALK, in the footsteps of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, was in a direction AWAY from God.
E. How is it with our walk today?
F. Walking with God must be on His terms.
I. WE MUST WALK LIKE GOD.
A. 1Pet 2:21 (KJS) For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
§ The purpose for which such a perfect example has been provided is that we should walk in those steps.
B. This is FAR, VERY FAR, from what was happening in Israel in the days of Amos.
§ 1- They despised the law of the Lord (2:4).
§ 2- They sold the righteous for silver and the poor for a pair of shoes (2:6).
§ 3- A man and his father will go in unto the same maid (2:7).
§ 4- They stored up violence and robbery in their palaces (3:10).
§ 5- They were insincere and hypocritical in their worship (4:4,5).
II.
WE MUST WALK IN COMPANY WITH GOD.
A. Whenever Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, made all of the changes in worship (1 Kings 12:25ff), he began a heritage that refused to walk in the company with God.
§ His changes instituted a following that absolutely refused to walk IN COMPANY WITH GOD.
§ NINE times in the books of 1 & 2 Kings, the phrase: WHO MADE ISRAEL TO SIN is written.
B. These people to whom Amos is preaching were following in the steps of Jeroboam and those footsteps led AWAY from company with God because of his changes in God’s ordained plan of worship.
C. HOW DANGEROUS it is to begin such a path and how serious are the consequences of it--generations follow which will ALSO be led away from walking IN COMPANY WITH God.
