Conclusion.
Homer Hickman was a student in an impoverished high school in an impoverished coal mining town in West Virginia.
He dreamed of escaping the life of coal mining and becoming an astronaut.
He had heard of Sputnik and wanted to be a part of the space program – quite a dream for a coal miner’s son.
He had a teacher who believed in him and his friends who shared that dream, but he had a father who saw such dreaming as foolishness and wanted his son to follow his steps into the coal mine.
But he persisted in his dream and with the help of his teacher, Miss Riley, managed with a few missteps to enter the science fair with their rocket experiments.
(Show clip).
He told Homer, “You met your hero, and didn’t even know it.”
The truth was, his father was his hero, and he didn’t even know it.
There are some fathers here today who are heroes, but they don’t even know it.
