This is the one of the most reassuring verses to give use confidence in our salvation
No sin a believer has committed or can commit...
Past, present, or future...

Can be held against them...
Since the penalty was paid by Christ and righteousness was imputed to the believer
If you are in Christ...

You will not be condemned...
You will not be found guilty before God...
Because you are covered in the blood of Christ...
You stand before God with Jesus’ righteousness...

Verse 2: The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free

The “law of the Spirit of life” is the Gospel or law of faith
This true and powerful message...
Of Christ’s perfect work on the cross...
Sets us free from the Law
Which, as identified from the last chapter...
Brings about sin and death due to our weakness of flesh
Verse 3: What the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh
As identified from the last chapter...
The law cannot deliver from sin...
.
Or make one righteous
In fact, the law brings about sin and death...
Due to our weakness of flesh
The law could not bring about rightousness
Verse 3: God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin

Although, the law could not bring about righteounsnesss....
God did bring about righteousness
How?
By sending His Son, Jesus...
To stand in our place...
Although sinless...
He took on God the Father’s wrath...
Punished as if He was a sinner
He became an offering for the payment of our sin
Verses 3-4: He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us
4 so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
God’s condemnation against sin...
Was fully poured out on the sinless flesh of Christ
Why not just forgive us? Why punish Jesus?

God is Holy and Good...
By His very nature and attributes...
God can not let sin go unpunished
Every sin must be paid for
As
This is the requirement of the Law
Until one accepts Jesus as Lord and Savior of their life...
They are on death row...
Guilty and with a death sentence
Punishment is required...
Death is required...
Blood is required...
Will it be you be paying the bill or will Jesus be paying it for you?
Verse 4: Who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

We, as followers of Christ...
Walk in the Spirit...
We walk in righteousness...
We walk on the narrow road...
We walk by faith...
We become more Christ like
Verse 5: For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh
Believers in Christ...
Do not walk according to the flesh...
Do not walk in unrighteousness...
Do not walk on the wide road...
Do not walk by sight...
Do not look like the world
Verse 5: But those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.

Verse 6: For the mind set on the flesh is death
The wide road...
Leads to death
A mind that is occupied with the things of the flesh...
Will lead to condemnation
In Chapter 7, we talked about the weakness of the flesh...
But our mind, in also in the flesh...
Equals death
A mind set on the flesh...
Is evidence of one who does not know Christ
Verse 6: But the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace

However, a renewed mind...
A mind set on the Spirit...
Is a regenerated mind...
This is evidence of one who is born again
The mind of a genuine follower of Christ...
Has peace with God and eternal ife
So, we have to ask ourselves...
Do we have a renewed mind?
Verse 7: The mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so

Signs of a person who is not in fellowship with God...
Someone who does have a mind of the flesh...
They are hostile toward God
What does that look like?
They do not place themselves under God’s law...
They do not follow God’s law...
Why?
They are unable to to follow the law of God
They are a slave to sin
Verse 8: Those who are in the flesh cannot please God

One who is in the flesh or in the world...
Does not have the ability to please God
Verse 9: However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you
However, as believers...
We do not have to worry about that...
As followers of Christ we will appear as pleasing to God
However, Paul warns...
This is only true for you if the Spirit of God dwells in you
Evaluate your life, especially your mind...
Are you in the flesh or in the Spirit?
Are you in the world or in Christ?
Are you dead or alive?
I can’t tell you...
But God can
As the psalmist prayed in we must also ask:
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts;
24 And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way.
Why is this so important?
Verse 9: But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him

Again, we must ask ourselves...
Who do we belong to?
Whose are we?
Who is our master?
Who do we serve?
Let us surrender to Jesus as Lord and Savior of our life...
So that we can hear the sweetest words as declared in
23 “His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’
And not hear the most dreadful of declarations as in
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.
22 “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’
23 “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’

Verse 10: If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness

Paul reminds us again from the last chapter...
Yes, our flesh is weak because of sin...
But we do not live in sin...
We do not live of the world...
We are not to be unrighteous in our actions...
As we are no longer a slave to sin
Our spirit is alive now...
Because of the righteousness of Christ...
Who impudent His righteousness on us
We are transformed...
We are a new creation
Verse 11: But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you

The same power that rose Jesus from the dead...
We are spiritually dead
In every sense of the word...
Totally Depraved
But by the same power that rose Jesus from the dead...
It was by that power that will raise our mortal bodies on day
Into newness of life
Our weak flesh will be transformed in the same manner that our mind was transformed
Verse 13: If you are living according to the flesh, you must die

Because God is just...
If you are living according to the flesh...
If you place your trust in the world...
You must die
Verse 13: But if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live
However, if we live by the Spirit...
We will live

Verse 14: For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God

The sons of God or followers of Christ...
Are not lost or directionless...
We are being led by God...
He is shepherding us in His ways and His path
Verse 15: For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again
We do not need to fear ever again...
That is we do not need to fear death...
That is we do not need to fear punishment...
We are not under slavery of sin if we place our trust in Him
Verse 15:But you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”

Jesus as our Lord...
Jesus as our Master...
Jesus owning us...
Us being a slave to Him...
Does not feel like slavery
We are adopted by Him as sons and daughters
We cry out to Him Abba...
We cry out to Him Father
What kind of master or owner is called a Father...
This is not a typical relationship...
This is why we have a spirit of adoption with God
Verse 16: The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God

Once you are born again...
Once Jesus is the Lord of your life..
We receive..
The Holy Spirit...
Our Comforter...
Our Helper...
He testifies that we are Children of God
Testifies that we are Children of God
In Roman culture...
For an adoption to be legally binding...
7 reputable witnesses had to be present, attesting to its validity
So, God’s Holy Spirit confirms the validity of our adoption...
By the fruit He produces in us...
And the power He provides for spiritual service

We must ask ourselves...
Verse 17: Fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

Verse 17: Fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.
We need to change our perception of suffering...
We need to realize that when we suffer...
We are sharing an experience with our Lord
So just as we suffer with Christ...
We will be glorified with Him
Proof of the believer’s ultimate glory is that he suffers...
Whether it comes as mockery, ridicule, or physical persecution...

because of his Lord
This is why we need to thank God for our sufferings
When was the last time someone gave a praise report…
And thank God for a suffering they are experiencing
How about in our person prayers to God...
Do you only thank him for the things you call good in your life?
Consider Job’s response to His wife in
10 But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.
Also, consider Paul and Silas in :
20 and when they had brought them to the chief magistrates, they said, “These men are throwing our city into confusion, being Jews,
21 and are proclaiming customs which it is not lawful for us to accept or to observe, being Romans.”
22 The crowd rose up together against them, and the chief magistrates tore their robes off them and proceeded to order them to be beaten with rods.
23 When they had struck them with many blows, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to guard them securely;
24 and he, having received such a command, threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.
25 But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them;
Notice it was hymns of praise they sang
They praised God after being beaten and while chained up in jail

Verse 18: For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us
If Paul experienced all he experiences...
Beatings, Imprisonment, shipwrecks...
And eventually martyrdom
And all this suffering...
Does not compare to the glory that will be revealed to us

Even creation is eager to be restored as the new earth as promised by God
reads:
1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.
Verse 21: That the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption

Creation itself actually groans and suffers...
As if it is going through childbirth
Verse 23: We ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body

Verse 24: For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees?

“Hope” in the Greek is not the same as the English usage of the word...
“Hope” in Greek refers to something we are most certain of...
It just has not yet been realized
So we are confident it will happen in the future
Verse 25: But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it

Because of our confidence in Him...
