GENESIS #14 Genesis 22-23 GENESIS 22: “After these things…” 1 MANY CHAPTERS EXPLAINING ABRAHAM’S LIFE AND DIVINE PURPOSE 2 THE AKEDAH Means “binding” God instructed Abraham to release his muchloved son Ishmael Rescued by “angel of Yehoveh” Now, Isaac is to be removed from Abraham Rescued by “angel of Yehoveh” Both were considered “firstborn” sons by Abraham 3 GOD TESTS ABRAHAM 1) 2) We’re told this, but Abraham didn’t know it! We know from the first verse that Isaac will survive God’s demand on Abraham came in a dream at night He is to offer Isaac as an ‘Olah……a burnt offering 5 kinds of sacrificial burnt offerings with different purposes and names Offerings distinguished by: What is offered Purpose and function 4 MT. MORIAH Temple Mount Mt. Moriah City of David 5 A 50 MILE JOURNEY Mt. Moriah Be’er Sheva Abraham took 2 servants with him Took wood for the altar fire with him No reason for Abraham to take wood, as there was plenty of wood in the hills of Jerusalem Isaac carrying the wood is a perfect parallel of Jesus carrying his own cross 6 FATHER AND SON TOGETHER AT THE SACRIFICIAL ALTAR Abraham told servants they’d return. A lie? Prefigures Christ telling his disciples that, for now, they could not go where He was going It was necessary for Father and Son to perform the sacrifice together The Son = the sacrifice The Father = initiate and accept the sacrifice 7 ISAAC AND MESSIAH: TYPES AND PARALLELS 1) Vs.2: Only son is the sacrifice 2) Vs.3: 3 days after being condemned to death, each was alive 3) Vs.6: Carried the wooden implement of death to the place of sacrifice 4) Vs.8: God provided the sacrificial lamb 5) Vs.13: A Ram (male) was the sacrificial object 6) Vs.14: The place was called Jehovah Jireh, meaning God provides. 9 ANGEL OF YHWH RESCUES ISAAC “Angel of the Lord” stops the sacrifice, and then embellishes the already given covenants Mal’ach Yehoveh “I have sworn by Myself.” Genealogy of Nahor is given 12 sons for Nahor, just as 12 sons for Ishmael and for Jacob (Israel) 10 GENESIS 23: THE DEATH OF SARAH Sarah dies at the age of 127 years Tradition says the strain of the Mt. Moriah near-death of Isaac was the cause Abraham 138 years old when his beloved wife died First recorded death and burial of a Hebrew 11 CAVE OF MACHPELAH IN HEBRON SHRINE OVER SUPPOSED LOCATION OF THE CAVE OF MACHPELAH 12
