I.       Joshua’s Commission.

A.     The Charge. (Joshua 1:1-2)

Joshua 1:1 After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, it came to pass that the LORD spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' assistant, saying: 2 "Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them -- the children of Israel.

B.     The Promise – the land will be yours. (Joshua 1:3-4)

§  Hence, the promised land.

3 "Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses. 4 "From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the River Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your territory.

C.     The Assurance – I will not abandon you. (Joshua 1:5)

5 "No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you.

II.    Joshua’s Challenge.

A.     Be strong and courageous. (Joshua 1:6)

6 "Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.

B.     Courage to obey God when obedience leads to danger. (Joshua 1:7)

7 "Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.

§  Success lies in Obedience to God’s Word

III. Keys to Courage.

A.     Acceptance of God’s Word. (Joshua 1:8)

8 "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Pro 24:5 A wise man is strong, Yes, a man of knowledge increases strength;

Psa 27:14 Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD!

Psa 31:24 Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart, All you who hope in the LORD.

§  Waiting and hoping are synonyms with God’s Word. It is hope that enables you to wait.

B.     Awareness of God’s Presence. (Joshua 1:9)

9 "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."

Isa 41:10 Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.'

2 Chronicles 32:1-23: Hezekiah and Sennacherib.

2Ch 32:7 "Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid nor dismayed before the king of Assyria, nor before all the multitude that is with him; for there are more with us than with him.

§  Formula: 1 + God = more than enough.

§  The claims of Sennacherib are the claims of today: where is this God? Where is the evidence?

§  The response of God’s people is the same today: prayer.

He wants us to be strong and have courage.

He wants us to arise and go.

We no longer fight for lands – we fight for souls.

We fight for our freedom.

We fight for the freedom of those we barely know. Why? Because that desire is in our hearts.

We choose to be courageous.
