4192 What A Job!

“The pastor teaches, though he must solicit his own classes.

He heals, though without pills or knife.

He is sometimes a lawyer, often a social worker, something of an editor, a bit of a philosopher and entertainer; a salesman, a decorative piece for public functions, and he is supposed to be a scholar.

He visits the sick, marries people, buries the dead, labors to console those who sorrow, and to admonish those who sin, and tries to stay sweet when chided for not doing his duty.

“He plans programs, appoints committees when he can get them; spends considerable time in keeping people out of each other’s hair; between times he prepares a sermon and preaches it on Sunday to those who don’t happen to have any other engagement.

Then on Monday he smiles when some jovial chap roars, ‘What a job—one day a week!’ ”

That's the perspective that many people take, until they get to know the pastor and his responsibilities.

When you understand his role and responsibilities, it will make honor him.

As Paul brings his letter to a close, he gives some final instructions to this blossoming church.

He instructs them on their duty the pastor, their duty to the parishioners and their duty to themselves personally.

Paul is not reproving the church, but asking that they continue in these actions.

In our text today, Paul shows us how to honor the pastor by through two request.

Acknowledge the Work of the Pastor

These three areas of work done by the elders in the church of Thessalonica, should be done by the pastors of our churches today.

The work of the pastor?

They were toiling, doing wearisome labor, until they were extremely tired with the congregation.

This hard work, implies they had to deal with difficulties and trouble.

No work was to hard for them to accomplish.

You ever noticed the pastor seems to know a little bit about everything?

They were supervising the congregation.

They were overseeing worship service and the church ministries.

They were in charge of the local congregation.

It was their job to influence others as to cause them to follow a recommended course of action.

The had to leading with authority.

Your pastor is supervising the church.

Although he may not be the chairman of your ministry, he is still in charge of it.

He may not be leading every worship song, but he still leading the worship service.

Supervising isn’t always easy but with the right people it can be.

They were warning and counseling individuals and groups in terms of their behavior.

They had to provide instruction concerning correct behavior and belief.

They were warning the church to abstain from wrongdoing and were rebuking them when they were guilty of wrongdoing.

You pastor has to tell you whats whats wrong in your behavior and your belief.

This will help when your up late flipping through channels and coming to Bible Study arguing what you heard some preacher say on television.

Your pastor and I know Pastor Tyler J. Prude will correct you.

He will let you know when you’re out of context.

He will let you know when you’re using the wrong meaning of a word.

He will let you know when you using a word the wrong way.

That is, he will let you know the tense, voice and mood of word.

I’m a firm believer, you can’t live out the Bible, if you don’t first understand the Bible.

1 Timothy 5:17 (ESV): Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.

Esteem the Pastor

Appreciate the Pastor For His Work

How were they to appreciate the pastor for his work?

The were to keep acknowledging them for who they were as being Chosen by God, exercising God given authority and doing a work assigned by God.

This church in Thessalonica was a young church.

It was established about three months before Paul wrote this letter.

There may have been some baby Christians who were beginning to resent the authority the elders, since these elders were new Christians too.

They were to keep esteeming the pastor.

They were to hold a high view of who the pastor was or is.

They ought to be motivated inwardly by the love in their hearts, and outwardly by the work the pastor has done.

When you esteem (appreciate) the pastor, the congregation will obey him, they will honor him, and financially support him.

They were to keep being at peace with one another.

When the congregation is at peace with one another, it makes the pastors job a joy and not a hardship.

What would this church be like if everybody got along?

How many seats do you think would be empty, if everybody got along?

How easy would the pastor’s job be, if we all got along?

17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account.

Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.

When we appreciate the pastor, we will obey him.

We will submit to his authority.

We’ll understand that his job is to look after our souls.

We accept the fact that he will have to give a final report on us.

The question is what wil he report about you?

It to your advantage that he can have joy talking about you.

I know your work has not always been easy.

You have been laboring with the church all these years.

You have been supervising the church for all these years.

You have been warning and counseling the church for all these years.

Now its time for the church tonight to show its appreciation for all that you do.

No, you don’t work one day a week, but you’re always on call, always studying, always on standby for the next situation.

So we salute you tonight on behalf of our Prophet, Priest, and King whose name is Jesus.

Who labored and died for the church.

And who is coming back again.

Pastor keep leading, church keep on following.

Pastor keep preaching church keep listening.

Pastor keep serving, church keep honoring.
