Intro:

Isaac and Rebekah have twins, Jacob and Esau.
This was no ordinary family and no ordinary birth.

Birth of 2 nations

Genesis 25:19–23 ESV
These are the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham fathered Isaac, and Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean, to be his wife. And Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife, because she was barren. And the Lord granted his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived. The children struggled together within her, and she said, “If it is thus, why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the Lord. And the Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the older shall serve the younger.”
The story sounds familiar
gen 25:19-
A wife with no children.
Then they turn to God acknowledging Him as the source of all life
God blesses them with children, then strange things start happening
She could tell things weren’t right
They struggled with each other in the womb
God reveals more of His plan
Genesis 25:23 ESV
And the Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the older shall serve the younger.”
gen 25:
God reveals much
2 nations
They will be at odds
Not just before birth but throughout their lives and their descendants
One will be stronger
Older will serve the younger
a break of protocol from their day.
Culture dictated that oldest would be the heir and would rule over younger siblings

Brothers at Odds

Genesis 25:24–28 ESV
When her days to give birth were completed, behold, there were twins in her womb. The first came out red, all his body like a hairy cloak, so they called his name Esau. Afterward his brother came out with his hand holding Esau’s heel, so his name was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them. When the boys grew up, Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents. Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
Gen 25:24-
They struggled with each other before birth
They struggle at birth
They have struggled in life
Quite a contrast
Israel vs Edom
Esau rugged outdoorsman and hunter
Jacob plain, friendly man enjoying home life
Isaac favored Esau and Rebekah favored Jacob
Genesis 25:29–34 ESV
Once when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted. And Esau said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted!” (Therefore his name was called Edom.) Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright now.” Esau said, “I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?” Jacob said, “Swear to me now.” So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
Gen 25:
birthright is a double portion of the inheritance
Exodus 4:22 ESV
Then you shall say to Pharaoh, ‘Thus says the Lord, Israel is my firstborn son,
it also included the right to be chief and priest
Esau had no real claim to birthright anyway
God had said he would serve his younger brother.
They still struggle today
This is how God worked out that detail
He sold his birthright release all wordly claim to it
Rash, living in the moment not considering the future
Their descendants still struggle today
Jew vs Muslim
Israel vs Arab

Brothers as a Picture

Genesis 26:1–5 ESV
Now there was a famine in the land, besides the former famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Gerar to Abimelech king of the Philistines. And the Lord appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; dwell in the land of which I shall tell you. Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you, for to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham your father. I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.”
ISAAC chosen by GOD to receive the covenant of Abraham
Grade- unearned and undeserved
This is used in the NT

Romans 9:13 ESV
As it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”
Jacob- the righteous
Those who have God’s mercy
Those who have repented and trusted Jesus
Esau- the wicked
Those under God’s wrath
It isn’t up to us to determine who can and will be saved.
God knows already
God has chosen to forgive those who repent and trust Him
