Home is the building block of Society. Many of the practices of the home are put on display in society. The Billboard of Society is the Home.
My mother grew up in a very abusive loveless home.
I was raised in a very loving and nurturing home.
I still remember when my mother recieved Jesus as her savior and it changed everything in her.
This passage in all about the home. Paul is encouraging the Colosse church to focus on the home and make sure Jesus is not just a guest that shows up from time to time, but that is a regular resident of the home.
I remember the family shows of the past.
Leave it to Beaver
Father knows Best
Even Big Country and Bonanza
Patridge Family / The Brady Bunch
The Family Ties / Cosby Show / Silver Spoons/ Growing Pains/ Different Strokes/ Good Times
Then … Full House, The Wonder Years, Family Matters.
Roseann / Married with Children / The Simpson
All of these shows began to reveal what was going on in the home. Helped families learn how to handle different situations.
God has a lot to say about the family.
This passage begins by addressing different people in the home and how they should act in a Christ Centered house.
I. Wives in a Christ Centered Family. vs 18 Eph. 5:22
Very special person. I have had the privelege of conducting a few weddings and each case the bride who is becoming a wife is very special even my very own wife is very special and dear to God, me and the family.
Dr. Hummel shares a quote about wives.
“A wife is very special. Her smile can lighten ha heavy heart. She can warm a cold room just by walking throught the door. She has a priveat smile that belongs to just her husband when they both recall a fond and secret memory. A wife is an unpredictable creature. She can remember a rose placed in her hand 25 years ago, but can’t recall if she turned the stove off. She cries when when she is happy, and smiles when life’s struggles make her sad. A pair of beautiful eyes that shines both faith and love. A best friend. This is a wife! A sweetheart through all the years of a man’s life. A helpmate when the load grows so heavy.
A friend when all other friends have turned their heads away. When a man runs out of heart, a wife give part of hers. She rekindles the spark of your dreams. She can make her husband young again just with the sparkle in her eye. She is charm, love, enchantment, hope, dreams, pleasure, laughter, and delight all wrapped up in the most wonderful woman in the world…your wife.
Two great verses that remind us of the favor we have in a good wife.
Proverbs 18:22 KJV 1900
Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, And obtaineth favour of the Lord.
Proverbs 18:22
Proverbs 19:14 KJV 1900
House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: And a prudent wife is from the Lord.
Wives learning to “submit” from Christ’s Example.
The Word submit is in Greek hupotassa which means - to willingly place yourself under.
Jesus willingly place Him self under God, but have you though about Joseph and Mary, or people he served as a carpenter, the local authorities, or try Harod or even Pilate. Wow what a thought.
Jesus didn’t claim to be better or had a better way of doing things. Jesus just submitted.
A wife’s submission should never be begged, ordered, or demanded by her husband. It is a wife’s love language to her husband.
Girls question … How does he treat his mother?
Guys question… How does she treat her dad?
Submission because of what is asks for is in direct opposition to pride and selfishness.
James 4:6–7 KJV 1900
But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
James
Submission is only in the context of a husband and a wife. Not just male and female.
Titus 2:4–5 KJV 1900
That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
“as is fitting to those who belong to the Lord.”
This is for believers - World doesn’t get it. Strange thing, hard.
just as husbands love, and children obey so the this is wives God given role.
Don’t forget…Let the word of Christ dwell in her us richly.
II. Husband / Dads in a Christ Centered Home. 19,21
Ephesians 5:25 KJV 1900
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
A Husband is looking for that special young lady who he can commit his loyalty too. A knight in shining armor has to have a damsel in distress.
What Dr. Hummel has said about being a husband
A husband is a funny creature…every wife should have one. He is someone to laugh and cry with, someone to lean on when the going gets rough. He is ready to fix all problems and available to share the blame when things go wrong. He is a little bit of heartache at times, but he is also one big batch of love and happiness. He should be tenderness when a wife needs tenderness. He should be strength when a wife needs strength. He know he’s never quite the hero his wife make him out to be, but he make a home feel safe just by being there. This is a husband.
The husband that hunts with a loving focus
A husband that findeth Solomon told husbands to hunt for a great wife. Not very casual, but focused and then continue to love that wife with the findeth loving passion.
Husband Love your wives.
Not like pizza or hunting!
Not life a dog or football!
She is your equal in creation and made in the image of God.
Husband need to know what love is!
Quantity it is the word agapao which means a God love.
Quality of the Love is as God loves us! Wow
Let’s look at God’s Love
Unconditional
Unquestioned
Uninterrupted
Unending
Dad’s that are provokers
The word provoke means to … stir up, to excite or to stimulate usually through quarreling, arguing, or contention.
This usually happens through communication.
Try these on for size:
Unrealistic demands (“I can’t do that!”)
Perfection (“My best is not good enough”)
Criticism or No Praise “I can’t please Him Why try?”
Fear Factor: (“Uh-oh! Dad’s made again.”)
Lest they be discouraged.
Do you lack courage? Are you apathetic because you just don’t care anymore?
Pray for your Dad? Ask God to speak to your Dad.
III. Children in a Christ Centered Home. 20
This age group refers to anyone still living at home.
Three categories of family members Husband/Dad Wife/Mom and children.
Children are to Obey … Obey … hupakouo which means to listen attentively, to heed or conform to a command. hupo means to place under or below. Akouo means to hear, or give audience to, or to allow to come to the ear.
Of all the commands this is so simple for success, “Children obey your parents.”
Two words that have a symbiotic relationship Obey and listening.
What kind of ears do you have.
Attentive ears:
Inclining ears:
Stopped ears: 21:13
Hard-hearted ears:
Hearing ears:
Reinforcement
Ephesians 6:1–2 KJV 1900
Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)
How should we obey? Quickly, Sweetly, Completely.
Christ will be at home when we put these simple principles into practice.
