Jesus’ Twelve Find a New 12th

Judas is no longer a part of the twelve due to committing suicide after betraying Jesus
That vacancy caused the disciples to find a twelfth member
,
Acts 1:21–26 ESV
21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.” 23 And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen 25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” 26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

// BE WISE ABOUT WHO YOU LET IN

1. Choose Wisely

Friendship Circles
Jesus had 3 intimate, 12 close, 72 casual
Acquaintances, Casual Friends, Close Friends, God & Me
Understanding these different levels means we need to be wise about who has access to our lives.
Social Media Profiles: Separate accounts or close friends feature

Choosing Matthias:

Use God’s Guidance - His Word
*at this point, the Holy Spirit had not filled them and was not leading them. They had to go by the word they knew from scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken to them
Consider How Long They Have Been In Your Life
*they used common sense on this one
“one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us”
You’re not going to reveal your big personal thoughts to someone you just met
Pray, pray, pray
one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us
*Jesus prayed before choosing His disciples ()
This is really going to grow as someone gets closer to you.
There’s certain people in my past that I had to pray about letting them close to me because I saw that they were using me
They Cast Lots
- essentially roll dice
*this is a way is them trusting God for the result, also a very cultural thing to do
not a perfect way to choose, however it is so much better than our modern-day ways of making decisions: with emotions, circumstances, feelings, desires, etc.

2. You Become What You Spend Time Around

How many of you have a friend you might call, foolish?
How many of you have a friend you might call, foolish?
Proverbs 13:20 ESV
20 Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.
Proverbs 13:20 ESV
20 Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.
The reality is that you become what you hang around
Dirty Sock Theory
take a clean sock and dirty sock and put them in the same bag.
come back a week later, what’s the result?

Judgment vs. Assessment

Don’t be afraid to assess the people that you let in your life.
Draw the line at judgement.
Assessment
: evaluate or estimate the nature, ability, or quality of.
Judgement
: the process of forming an opinion or evaluation by discerning and comparing
: an opinion or estimate so formed

// BE FRIENDLY

No Gossip

Exodus 23:1 ESV
1 “You shall not spread a false report. You shall not join hands with a wicked man to be a malicious witness.
Proverbs 11:13 ESV
13 Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets, but he who is trustworthy in spirit keeps a thing covered.
Proverbs 16:28 ESV
28 A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends.

Speak Encouragement

Romans 15:2 ESV
2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.
1 Thessalonians 4:18 ESV
18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.
these words is the The Gospel
Hebrews 3:13 ESV
13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

Give Generously

Acts 2:44–45 ESV
44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.
Hebrews 13:16 ESV
16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
, by love serve one another
Galatians 5:13 ESV
13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

Speak Truth in Love

Ephesians 4:15–16 ESV
15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
Love makes truth palatable, while truth makes love practical.
Truth without love could destroy a person by its brutality, while love without truth could destroy a person by its insincerity.
Love without truth is sentimentality, feeling without responsibility.
Truth without love is powerless to change lives, while love without truth could change them in the wrong direction.
We can state the facts, but run it through the filter of “I love you no matter what”
*remember the model; 3 steps before you separate from someone
Hate the sin, not the sinner
