3 Big Questions to look at today?

Who does Jesus call as his disciples?

How does Jesus call his disciples?

How does Jesus call affect his disciples?

Who does Jesus call?

1. Not the important
2. The lowly and humble
a. These men were not the smartest or brightest. While capable enough to do challenging work, they were not scholars, rabbis, or princes.
b. Jesus didn’t and doesn’t call the only the best and brightest. When I did youth ministry over a couple of decades, it was commonly thought that if you “got” the quarterback and head cheerleader everyone else would follow. This rarely the case.
3. Sinners-people that don’t think they know it all or are perfect. Those types of people don’t believe they need a savior or rescue. But those that know their sin and longing for rescue, are precisely the ones Jesus calls to follow him. This describes people from all walks of life: rich, poor, great or terrible families.
a. Andrew-lives in Bethsaida, brother to Simon, bringer of people to Jesus
loaves & fishes boy
-greeks longing to meet Jesus
b. 2nd of John the Baptists disciples (John)
i. most scholars hold to this. Since he is recounting the exact conversation between John the Baptist, his disciples and ensuing conversation with Jesus.
c. Simon (Peter)
i. fisherman
ii. brother of Andrew
iii. to be renamed Petros-rock
d. Phillip
i. lives in Bethsaida
ii. found by Jesus
e. Nathaniel (Bartholomew)
II. How does Jesus call his disciples?
A. Through knowledge of who he is
John’s disciples had some knowledge of who Jesus was and what he was about.
After John announces for them to “behold the lamb of God” a second time in consecutive days, 2 of John’s disciples immediately begin to follow Jesus.
B. Jesus asks a great question:
i. “what are you seeking?”
ii. “Come and see.”
C. Jesus continues to deepen the call on a disciple’s life by spending time with them.
i. from four o’clock in the afternoon till sundown
ii. then early the next day as well
iii. As we study the Bible and look at the three years of Jesus life, we see that the majority of things he taught his disciples was through spending time with them doing real life stuff.
III. What effect does Jesus call have on disciples?
A. Leads to living a life of following and learning of Jesus.
i. We don’t know the exact conversations these first disciples had or what even laters ones had. We get glimpses.
ii. But we do see is the effect spending time with Jesus has.
a. They confess him as Messiah, Lord, and King
b. They want to spend more time with him.
“He who does not long to know Christ knows nothing of Him yet.” Charles Spurgeon
c. The want to introduce others to Jesus.
B. Leads to bringing others to Jesus.
i. through word-proclamation
ii. through deed-demonstration
C. Look at what the new disciples do:
i. The spend time with Jesus
ii. They go find others
iii. They bring them to Jesus.
