Once Upon a Time
Let’s take a look at the first of three verses from our text...
The fruit we were ashamed of was produced by the flesh; encouraged by the world and the father of lies...
Once upon a time this is how we lived
according to the flesh and the world
it was our master - we were it’s slaves
Once upon a time we were walking toward our destruction
Our minds were set on earthly things
When you live for only what you see you cannot live a life of faith
because faith is the evidence of things not seen Heb 11:1 KJV
faith is a conviction of things not seen Heb 11:1 ESV
Living by sight only builds human; earthly; worldly desire
that type of life only leads to sin...
[Once upon a time we were Slaves to Sin and Death…but now there exists a way to move from Here to Eternity…]
Now Slaves of God
There is hope and a better way to spend eternity...
The second verse of our text reads...
To produce this fruit one must know the truth
and God’s word is truth Jn 17:17
That truth will lead you to a water grave of baptism everytime
there we are born again;
added to the family of God
becoming slaves of God and righteousness...
The Spiritual Law of the New Testament has set us free from the Old Covenant of sin and death which no man could keep...
Now we live as the righteousness of God
We are no longer under the curse of...
the world
the flesh
that comes from the father of lies
Jesus sacrifice on Calvary’s Cross has set us free and we ought to live like it
Jesus didn’t die that we might continue in sin
Jesus didn’t die that we might return to the ways of the world
Jesus didn’t didn’t die so we could gratify the fleshly nature of wickedness
Jesus didn’t die that we should continue being duped by the father of lies
No! We understand the responsibility that comes from being freed and it is eternally liberating...
[Romans 6:21-23 demonstrates the contrasts between...
This is the clear parallelism between vv.
21 and 22 that is created if v. 21 is punctuated with a question mark after “then”:
Status
Result
Outcome
v. 21:
“then”: slaves of sin, free from righteousness
“fruit” bringing shame
death
v. 22:
“now”: free from sin, slaves of God
“fruit” bringing sanctification
eternal life
Paul highlights the negative nature of the “freedom” enjoyed by Christians in their past by showing that the “fruit” of which they are now ashamed resulted from that freedom.
Wage Earned versus a Gift Received
We may summarize the verse by noting, with Lloyd-Jones, its three contrasts: the master that is served—sin versus God; the outcome of that service—death versus eternal life; and the means by which this outcome is attained—a “wage” earned versus a gift received.
What we work and sow, is what we recieve
What do you work for?
Do you work for self, or God?
What bank account do you see your wages going into?
is your sexual immorality deposited in a Righteous Bank account?
is your idolatry deposited in a Righteous Bank account?
Is your thievery deposited in a Righteous Bank account?
Is your Greed; your drunkeness; your revelry; your lies; are these the investments you are banking on for eternity?
Will they be cashed in for admittance into the Kingdom of Heaven?
No!
We need a different currency to live by
We need a new standard to guide us
We need need to move to a Blessed Assurance
We can move from here to an eternity with God and all His Saints
but we got to start living in that faith now
while we are in this world
with all it’s obstacles and trappings
We need to believe the testimony revealed to us in scripture about the one who died for our sins that we might have an opportunity for eternal life.
Now and in the future we proclaim and live by the testimony of this Word that moves us from now to eternity
We preach today and we’ll preach October 18-20 at the Eternity Workshops
Conclusion:
Once upon a time we we’re slaves to wickedness and free from righteousness
where are you at today?
have you obeyed the Lord’s Doctrine that sets you free from sin?
Now we are free and can be free as the slaves of God
by being born again
you can start making deposits of righteousness stored up in Heaven where no man can steal it nor can it be corrupted
All our works are like filthy rags before God
It’s time to accept His free gift of Grace by obeying and following His Way...
