Prayer — SIS
Why are we here? Why do we exist? What is our purpose?
You haven’t just thought about that question, you’ve felt that question?
That’s one of those questions that you don’t just think about, you feel it. You feel its weight bearing down on you.
Why am I here? What am I supposed to be doing? Am I just an accident that knew nothing before I was born and will know nothing after I die? Do I have value and worth?
What is my purpose?

purpose

■ noun

1 the reason for which something is done or for which something exists.

--------------------
Let’s look at Colossians, Paul is talking about Jesus
Colossians 1:15–20 CSB
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For everything was created by him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities— all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and by him all things hold together. 18 He is also the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile everything to himself, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
--------------------
Colossians 1:16 CSB
16 For everything was created by him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities— all things have been created through him and for him.
--------------------
You were created for Jesus!
you were knitted together by God
Psalm 139:13 CSB
13 For it was you who created my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
--------------------
And God doesn’t want you to perish, but to live with Him forever
2 Peter 3:9 CSB
9 The Lord does not delay his promise, as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance.
--------------------
That’s why Jesus Came to earth
Luke 19:10 CSB
10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost.”
--------------------
Jesus wants us to be with Him for all eternity
John 17:1–5 CSB
1 Jesus spoke these things, looked up to heaven, and said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you gave him authority over all flesh, so that he may give eternal life to everyone you have given him. 3 This is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and the one you have sent—Jesus Christ. 4 I have glorified you on the earth by completing the work you gave me to do. 5 Now, Father, glorify me in your presence with that glory I had with you before the world existed.
--------------------
Then he prayed for the apostles, but after he prayed for the apostles, he prayed for us. He prayed for you and me...
John 17:20–26 CSB
20 “I pray not only for these, but also for those who believe in me through their word. 21 May they all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us, so that the world may believe you sent me. 22 I have given them the glory you have given me, so that they may be one as we are one. 23 I am in them and you are in me, so that they may be made completely one, that the world may know you have sent me and have loved them as you have loved me. 24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, so that they will see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the world’s foundation. 25 Righteous Father, the world has not known you. However, I have known you, and they have known that you sent me. 26 I made your name known to them and will continue to make it known, so that the love you have loved me with may be in them and I may be in them.”
--------------------
Jesus prayed that relationship with Him, that we would be one. Unity.
Then He prayed that we would be where he is so that we could see his glory.
John 17:24 CSB
24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, so that they will see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the world’s foundation.
--------------------
We weren’t made for this life. We were made for everlasting life with God, unhindered, beautiful, perfect, joyful, peaceful, amazing life. Jesus is that life, and He wants us to be with him to experience it with him.
That is our purpose. He made us for Him. To love Him and be loved by Him forever. He wants us to be His children, and for Him to be our Father. He made us to love Him and to love each other. That is our purpose.
Mark 12:28–31 CSB
28 One of the scribes approached. When he heard them debating and saw that Jesus answered them well, he asked him, “Which command is the most important of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The most important is Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. 31 The second is, Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other command greater than these.”
--------------------
So what is our Purpose? Why do we exist? Why did God make us in the first place? To Love Him with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength. And to love our neighbor as ourselves. Or simply to...

But what about right now? on this broken sinful planet? It’s true, we weren’t made for this life. But He did give us an important work to do while we are here.
Matthew 28:18–20 CSB
18 Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
--------------------
You see God is the King of a perfect kingdom, and He has handed that kingdom over to His Son Jesus. He gave Jesus all authority in heaven and on earth. And Jesus gave us a mission to accomplish. To go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them. We are to share the gospel with everyone. Those who embrace it, we are to baptize them, and then to disciple them. Because they are going to be our brothers and sisters in God’s kingdom for all of eternity.
Our gaze, our vision, must never fall short of why God created us and has us here in the first place. It’s that everlasting perfect life with Him and each other as a family of people who love each other with a real meaningful love. And God want’s everyone to be a part of that family and His kingdom. So we must grow to maturity as disciples, and we must go and make more disciples, and help them grow to be mature disciples so that they can go and make more disciples as we go and make more disciples, until we are called home.
So what is our mission?
To Be Disciples Who Make Disciples
--------------------
We won’t be here on this earth long. Eternity is going to make our lives here seem like they never happened. But what we do while we are here will make all the difference for all eternity.
If you want to give your life to something that will matter forever, give your life to being a disciple who makes disciples.
