AG:
TS: Hebrews declares that Jesus is superior to all
Specifically, we have seen that He is superior to all creation, to angels, to humans.
At the end of ch 2, the author brings out one of the ramifications of His superiority
Hebrews 2:17–18 ESV
Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
Hight Priest- merciful and faithful
made propitiation, payment by a substitute, for sins
He is now able to help those who are tempted.
In ch 3, Jesus is presented as superior to the founder of the Jewish nation and faith, Moses
Moses was revered as a father in the faith
God used him to write the first 5 books of the OT, known as The Law
Both the OT and the NT refer to the commands of God as the “law of Moses” (Jos 8:31; 1Ki 2:3; Lk 2:22; Ac 13:39). Yet, as great as Moses was, Jesus was infinitely greater.
God had used him to deliver the nation of Israel out of slavery in Egypt and through the wilderness to the promised land.
RS: Although 2000 years have come and gone, Jesus is still superior to all people past and present.
RS:

Consider Jesus

The author calls on us to pay careful attention and weigh the evidence and argument he is about to present. What follows is an explanation of the superiority of Jesus

Apostle and high priest v. 1

apostle- sent one One with rights power and authority of the sender
Jesus was sent by the Father
He came to do the will of the Father and He was successful at doing just that
God’s will was to deal with sin and Jesus dealt with it as He tasted death for us all.
high priest-
another reminder of the role Jesus fills.
It will be explained more thoroughly later
One who stands between God and us
He makes offering for sins before the Father
He shares the Word of God with us
He perfectly fulfills the role of priest
AS: We would do well to follow Him
Apostle- he has sent us
we carry His message to the world
The gospel!
Priests
1 Peter 2:9 ESV
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
we are royal priests
We minister to the people
We care for others
We pray for others

Faithful to God v. 2

just like Moses
Moses was honored for a reason.
Spoke face to face with God
Exodus 33:11 ESV
Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.
Gave the law
Nehemiah 9:13–14 ESV
You came down on Mount Sinai and spoke with them from heaven and gave them right rules and true laws, good statutes and commandments, and you made known to them your holy Sabbath and commanded them commandments and statutes and a law by Moses your servant.
To the Jews, Moses and the Law were synonymous
The author of Hebrews treads on dangerous ground
He was revered to them
But Jesus is greater!

Greater Glory than Moses v. 3

builder gets glory over the thing built v. 4
God is the builder of all
He created the universe and all the laws science will ever discover
He knows it better than any other person
He put it together and keeps it together.
Thus, He is greater than Moses
Moses vs Jesus
M- a faithful servant v. 5
a prophet (spoke of things to come)
Chief among all things, Jesus
built a nation by God’s power
In the end, he was just a servant
J- faithful SON v. 6
we are the house He is building
Speaks to the perseverance of the saints
When Jesus saves us, there is no going back, In fact, He saves us to the uttermost and real believers who have repented will never want to go back to enslavement to sin.
He gives us a new nature
Conclusion:
Jesus is superior.
Hebrews has spelled i tout many ways.
Believe it
Live in light of it
