This text is not about riches

1 Timothy 6:9–10 ESV
But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
1tim 6:

It’s about the heart; loving the wrong things

1 Timothy 6:9–10 ESV
But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
Chris Rice
I wake to find my soul in fragments Given to a thousand loves But only One will have no rival Hangs to heal me, spills His blood

It’s about the will; bowing to the wrong things

Luke 16:13 ESV
No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”
Matthew 6:24 ESV
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
1875 - William Ernest Henley
How charged with punishments the scroll,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.
Henley was blind as well, for we are all born slaves to sin and self, which manifests in many ways:
I am the captain of my soul.
slavery to style and popularity
slavery to vanity
slavery to various idols
slavery to a false self image
slavery to riches
To be a servant of Christ is to find true freedom

The realities of Heaven and Hell

Psalm 146:8 ESV
the Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous.
ps 146
Because the rich man loved and was slave to his riches, he was blinded to the realities ahead

Abraham’s Side

Carried by angels
Psalm 91:11–12 ESV
For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.
Hebrews 1:13–14 ESV
And to which of the angels has he ever said, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”? Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?
Now comforted
no mention of sores
no mention of sores
reclining at meal
by Abraham’s side; position of honor
We do not have a specific description; only that it will surpass every imagination
A chasm is fixed - security
Psalm 146:10 ESV
The Lord will reign forever, your God, O Zion, to all generations. Praise the Lord!

Hell’s Torments

In torment; not merely being tormented
Seeing Abraham; awareness
In Flames;
Mark 9:44 ESV
Isaiah 66:24 ESV
“And they shall go out and look on the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against me. For their worm shall not die, their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”
Revelation 14:10 ESV
he also will drink the wine of God’s wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.
A chasm is fixed
Genesis 6:3 ESV
Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.”
There are no more chances
Revelation 14:11 ESV
And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.”

There will be no end of desperation
Warn my brothers

Living with eyes opened

Living

Godliness with contentment
1 Timothy 6:6–7 ESV
But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.
1 Timothy 6:6 ESV
But godliness with contentment is great gain,
Not one or the other; both and
Rooted in God’s sovereignty
In light of this world’s temporary nature
FIGHT!
1 Timothy 6:11–12 ESV
But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
Be at peace with people; at war with sin
Active
Reach People
1 Timothy 6:17–19 ESV
As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
I believe in God, and the Bible is His Word
So I believe in a literal Heaven and Hell
In the same book, God says to love our neighbor
Luke 16:31 ESV
He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’ ”
There is no gimmick, no formula, no fear tactic to conversion
Luke 16:31 ESV
He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’ ”
But faith does come from hearing and hearing the Word of God
The good news is here and available and effective today:
Jesus was born to a virgin, laid in a manger, and worshipped by angels and shepherds
lived a perfect life because we don’t
died a death in our place to satisfy the just wrath of God
rose on the third day, victorious over death, Hell, and the grave.
is now seated at
He is now seated at the Father’s right hand,
He is making intercession for His own
He is with the Father, still sending the Spirit to draw and to save
He will one day return to take all who trust Him to enjoy paradise forever
No matter who or what your true love is, no matter who or what you bow to in service and worship, the Lord Jesus invites you today to open your eyes to eternal realities, to inherit eternal life by trusting in His finished work, and then to live like you have. No gimmicks, no scare tactics; just the Word of God; Moses, the prophets, and the gospel of Jesus Christ.
