Life as the Church

Necessary Conduct:

There is a necessary manner of conduct for those who belong to the church/household of God.
“how one ought to conduct himself” = “how it is necessary to conduct one’s self”

Descriptions of the Church

The Household of God
God’s family
God is Father and, as such, gets to determine the rules of conduct.
God is personal and relates to us as Father.
The Church of the Living God
God is the living God:
God is living God in that He is the source of ultimate life.
God is the living God in that He is the God of Resurrection and Eternal Life ().
The Pillar and Support of the Truth
The Church of God is meant to function—by means of our conduct and confession—as the entity in this world which upholds and supports genuine truth in God.

Necessary Conduct:

There is a necessary manner of conduct for those who belong to the church/household of God.
There is a direct correlation between a societies grasp on the truth and the Church’s faithfulness to represent God in that society.

The Heart of Truth: Jesus Christ

There is one common and universal focal-point of God’s truth
By common confession: Truth is a universal reality defined by God, centered on Jesus and upheld by all true believers (not perfectly, but faithfully).
— “There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one n God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.”
— “… until we all attain to the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure and the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.”
— “But if one is inclined to be contentious, we have no other practice, nor have the churches of God.”
Truth is both indicative and imperative/It is both fact and command/ it is both ‘is’ and ‘ought’.

Common confession = a common statement of truth regarding the Christian faith held by all genuine believers.
This common statement of truth is about godliness.
Truth about Jesus is truth about godliness.
You cannot separate the moral aspects of Jesus’ life and coming from the ethical aspects of Jesus’ life and coming.
Everything Jesus did demonstrated was truth—because He is truth—and everything He did was godly because everything He did was in obedience to the Father’s will.
lays out the confession (indicative/factual truth) of the church: Jesus Christ (Indicative always leads to imperative).
Indicative always leads to imperative.
Confessional truths about Jesus:
Incarnation and death (revealed in the flesh).
Resurrection (vindicated in the Spirit)—see .
The resurrection of Jesus was witnessed by angels as well as men (seen by angels).
Witnessed to through the proclamation of the Church.
Effective power and universal scope (Believed on in the world).
Ascension (taken up in glory).

Conclusion:

Life together as members of the Church (the household of God) involves living by a certain standard of conduct based upon the specific truth of Jesus Christ.

Conduct can never be separated from Confession.
