Revolving Doors.

Show revolving doors sketch.
I have a love hate releationship with revolving doors. I am fasenated by their simple design and yet I often fall foul of them hitting me as I walk through.
Then there is the are they automatic aren’t they automatic dilema, I remember going to the old Microsoft building on Victoria Street in central London, it had huge revolving glass doors, they must have been twelve feet high. The person infront of me stepped into the doors and just stood there, obviously assuming that they were automatic door. They wern’t. I gently pushed on the door and he walked fowards, obviously still convinced they were powered. I sometimes wonder how he got out of that building.
The other thing I love about revolving doors is going round more than once. I don’t know what it is but it is somehow mischevous and I like that. - Who else is going to admit having ben around a revolving door more than once?
The revolving door was invented in 1888 by Theophilus van Kannel from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. An old urban legend holds that revolving doors were invented to prevent horses from entering buildings. Although this is not true I think it fits with the fun nature of reveolving doors.

Doors in the bible

There are a number of references to doors in the bible, infact in one Jesus declares “I am the door” in John 10. I’ll get to that later but I want to start with a gate rather than a door but gate and door are interchangable. A gate is door and a door is gate. In the greek it is the same word.
I don’t want to start with Jesus though, I want to start with Jacob.
I think Chris used this passage when he spoke here once - Genesis 28:10-17
Genesis 28:10–17 NIV
10 Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran. 11 When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. 12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 There above it stood the Lord, and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. 15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” 16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” 17 He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”
I want to remind us of a few things which I know Chris covered but I want to pick up on just to set the scene.
This happened at no particular place - “when he reached a certain place” there was nothing special about it. - Heaven and earth are not a million miles apart. We often seperate the two in our minds. Earth while we are alive: a place for humans, rationality and religion. Heaven for when we are dead: a place for angels, faith and relationship.
Let’s just pop that myth now. Heaven and earth intersect each other. They are not distant places. You don’t die and become an angel in heaven. We will absolutly go to heaven when we die, we will absolutly experience heaven and all it entails in glorious ‘tecnnicolor’ when we die but that does not mean that we can not experience it now.
1 Corinthians 13:12 NIV
12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
Heaven and earth are interconnected, the story of Jacob speaks of this in the way that “He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.”
We can interact with heaven on a daily basis and The God of heaven’s armies and his armies and his armies can interect with earth freely. I am so thankful for that, that God can and does interact for our good.
In some ways we can consider Heaven and Earth as Gods Space and Our space (though in reality it is all Gods space) Jesus taught us that we are to deisre the over lapping of the two. He taught us this when he said Luke 11:2-3
Luke 11:2–3 NIV
2 He said to them, “When you pray, say: “ ‘Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. 3 Give us each day our daily bread.
Jesus taught us to pray for Heaven and Earth to overlap.
In the Old Testment this interaction between heaven and earth was an exclusive club, it tookpace with key individuals and specific events:
Moses on Mout Saini.
The high priest in the Holy of Holies
Jacob - when he wrestled and became isreal
The isralites as they were fed with mana.
Jesus changes this: The moment Jesus died on that cross it all changed , we read in Mark and Matthew
Mark 15:37–38 NIV
37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. 38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
This event removed the separation between the most Holy place and the Most Holy.
It pins the door to heaven open, it opens a clear pathway between heaven and earth. Between the Holy God and you and me.
That door is and was Jesus.
John 10:9–10 NIV
9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
In the past God’s glory was confined to the Holy of Holies, but with the veil torn and a door to heaven and God establihed that Gate that is Jesus we can experience .
Free and unrestricted access to God the Father through Christ.
The opportunity to see God’s glory revealed in all the earth.
The assurance that this is all made possible by God’s grace in Christ alone.
Well there are three significant tenants of our faith that I think we all grasp and yet not grasp as fully as we should.

We have Free and urnestricted access to God the Father through Christ.

Revelation 4:1-2 says
Revelation 4:1–2 NIV
1 After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” 2 At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it.
We are given the opportunity to stand in God’s presence as no other creature is. We are called to Join in the Holy worshiop of the heavnly hosts, and more - we are called to be WITH God, in Christ - yet how often do we do that. Do we approach being in God’s presence with the respect, awe, amazement, reverence that it deserves?
We come here and experience worship, we put on a CD, or UCB or songs of praise and enjoy listening to others ‘worhip’ but how often do we actually worship. Worship in a way that is about the God we are worshipping and not about the music or the words.
We get caught up in “whoo those words are amazing” or “I love that tune” we focus on the experience of worship rather than the worship of God.
A God that flung the stars into space.
A God the new each of us before we were formed in out mothers womb.
A God that is worthy of adoration and praise whatever we are going through, whatever our mood.
A God that loves us and chose you. That gave up his Son to die for each of us so that we have the Right and Ability to say Abba Father, I love you, I want to be with you. I know you love me. I know you have a plan. I worship you. I put you above my desires, my family, my job, my wallet. How often do we just stop and let our spirit cry out?
I think we get close this some times and then we turn the door that is Jesus, the door that gives us access to the Father in to a revolving door, we are heading in and suddenly we are heading back into the world again as we are distracted by the desires of the world. The desires of the flesh.
You know this revolving door attitude is not biblical
I’ll give you two reasons I know this isn’t biblical
You shall have no gods before me!
Mark 12:30 NIV
30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
-that includes TV, Money, even family -
we are not supposed to have a door to heacent that is constanlty rotating us back to other lesser gods.
Jesus was uncompromising on this…
Matthew 10:37 NIV
37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
Wow that is tough. - Explain about love affection - rather than love as in Godly.
The second reason I know that this revollving door attitude to accessin God and heaven is not biblical is that Revolving doors were only invented in 1888 and the last time I checked this (the bible) predated that.

The opportunity to see God’s glory revealed in all the earth.

When Jesus gave us the direct path to the father, opening up the door to heaven we are given he opportunity to see God’s glory revealed in all the earth.
So why don’t we ?
Edward Millar - argentinaian revivalist - traveled to Australia to a place that had seen a revival 40 years before he was invited to speak - there is no revival anymore but they continued to hold a confernce.
He stand to speak at a conference - Stands and looks over the heads of the people. Then he says “ are you still there?” it was like a move of God fell from the heavens and there was a revival again.
These people had been going throught he motions for the past thrity something years. Only when God shows up is there are revival
Have you ever wondered what is waiting in the heavens above us as we play chruch?
As we pray?
As we meet?
There are stories of people that have gone to heaven and are showed around. There are a couple of these accoutns that have the same form. The people as they are show around they are shown a large warehourse, inside the warehouse there are racks and racks of boxes, insdie the boxes are hand, feet, legs, kidney othe organs.
When they ask what these are the same explantion is given. "These are the healings that haven’t been recieved because people on earth won’t belive for them”
Anlagoy or real - this is an amazing picture of the things that are sat in heaven waiting to touch our lives if only we have the insight to know that the Kingdom of God is at hand, that his Glory can pervade the earth. That is His desire.
The greatest enemy of spiritul you is fleshley you. which has won this week.
If we want to see God’s glory revealed on earth - do we do anything about it?
Jesus spoke of another door in Matthew six he said this...
Matthew 6:6
Matthew 6:6 NIV
6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
When he said this is was in the context of being authentic and sincere in our prayers but three is something about shutting the door to the world, to distraction that make our time in prayer different. Your secret place my be a room, your car, the fields with the dog. It is less about where and more about attitude and positioning that puts our prime focus on the Father. We are promised that when we do this He will reward us. Can I just clarify something here. It says he will reward us - not he will grant our prayers. I want to raise this so that we don’t get dispondent or disallusioned when our prayers are not answered. We will however be rewared and as the greatest reward is intimate knowledge of the Father, and an expression of this is Gods glory on the earth I know that when we pray like this heavens treasures come bursting through that open door that seperates heaven and earth.

The assurance that this is all made possible by God’s grace in Christ alone.

Having Jesus as the only door to heaven and the Father - this is why he said...
Matthew 7:13–14 NIV
13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
This fact that he is the only door gives us the assurance that this is all made possible by God’s grace in Christ alone. Although I have spoken of prayer and reward, this is not a transaction of how much can I do to get by or more accuratly how little can I do to survive...
Francis Chan in his book Crazy Love - puts it this way
“The irony is that while God doesn't need us but still wants us, we desperately need God but don't really want Him most of the time.
He treasures us and anticipates our departure from this earth to be with Him-and we wonder, indifferently, how much we have to do for Him to get by.” ― Francis Chan, Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God
It is God’s love for us, the Grace that he gives so freely and his desire to be with us that lets us experience Him and his glory not what we do, say, think or desire. That said we have to reciprocate, God never forces his will on us…
We are given the option to walk away. To ignore Him.
We are also given the opportunity to Approach him, spend time with him, to worship him and experience the Glory of him this side of death and the other. This is by His Grace.
The door to heaven stands open.
The door to our lives, however, is a different matter. That door much like the door to 10 downing street has no handle on the outside but only on the in.
Revelation 3:19–21 NIV
19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. 21 To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne.

end.

Open the door to your life and close (if only momentarily) the door to the world.
The door of heaven stands open.
Mark 12:30 NIV
30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
The God that is worthy of our praise
Revelation 4:11 NIV
11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”

We pray.

O Lord our God, you alone are worthy of our praises.
Father, we give you all the glory, honor and praise for you deserve it.
It is you Lord who created all things. It is you Lord that made something out of nothing. It is You alone Lord that spoke creation into existence, It is You alone that created mankind.
Father, today we come to proclaim that we WILL lift up Your name high and praise you Lord. You are the beginning and the end and are worthy to be praised.
We thank you that through your grace we can come to you Father God Freely
We thank you that you desire to be with us, that you, throught the assurance that all ia made possible by God’s grace in Christ alone choose to bless us by letting us see your glory revealed in all the earth.
Thank You Lord for allowing us to be called your people. Thank you for another opportunity to worship you.
Lord, you alone deserves our praise and worship. We give you ALL the glory, honor and praise on today.
Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised in His Sanctuary.
My Hallelujah belongs to you!
