NORTHEAST HOUSTON COMMUNITY CHURCH
Sermon – A Message to the Churches
Scripture –     Rev 22:12-17
8-17-08

Rev 22:12-17
*12** *"And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward /is /with Me, to give to every one according to his work.
-
1.
I am coming quickly
Three times at the close of this book Christ says, "I am coming quickly!" (vv.
7, 12, 20).
The word "quickly" suggests "swiftly."
It means that when these great events start to occur, there will be no delay.
-
There is an interesting command given in this chapter that deals with the coming of Christ.
This scene is very similar to the scene in Daniel between Daniel and an angel who is telling Daniel of what is to come.
/Dan 12:4         *4 *"But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase."
NKJV/
-
The future events were so far off in the future that the angle told Daniel to seal up the book to keep the book shut until the time of the end.
-
But, look at what this angel tells John,
/Rev 22:10-11   *10 *And he said to me, "*Do not seal the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is at hand.* *11 *He who is unjust, let him be unjust still; he who is filthy, let him be filthy still; he who is righteous, let him be righteous*~* *still; he who is holy, let him be holy still."
NKJV/
*-*
*Quickly means swiftly and soon.
I must conclude that the time of Jesus’ return is sooner than we think.
*
/Matt 24:27-28 *27 *For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.
NKJV/

/1 Cor 15:51-52           *1 *Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed —  *52 *in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.
For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
NKJV/
-
2.     *My reward /is /with Me*
When Jesus comes to earth He will have his rewards with Him.
Jesus will come to give rewards and to Judge.
Believers will receive rewards and sinners will receive judgment.
There will be no delay.
*/Rev 11:18/**/ /*/The nations were angry, and Your wrath has come, And the time of the dead, that they should be judged, And that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints, And those who fear Your name, small and great/
*-*
3.     give to every one according to his work
/Matt 16:27      *27 *For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.
NKJV/
-
There is not a mention of glory at the time of the rapture.
He is just coming to take us away.
But when He comes to judge, that is when we will see His glory.
/Matt 25:31   /*/31/**/ /*/"When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy/*/~*/**/ /*/angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.
//NKJV/
-
Every time is read of rewards it pertains to believers, the saved.
The work that believers do will be judged not the believer.
/1 Cor 3:14-15            *14 *If anyone's work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward.
*15 *If anyone's work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.
NKJV/
-
The judgment will be of the believers’ works and will not affect the believer’s salvation.
-
Everyone’s works will not constitute the same reward.
The rewards will match the works.
/1 Cor 3:5-8     *5 *Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one?
*6 *I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.
*7 *So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase.
*8 *Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor.
NKJV/
-
*13** I am the Alpha and the Omega, /the /Beginning and /the /End, the First and the Last."~*
*
I don’t think I need to spend time on this.
You all should know by now that Jesus is eternal like the Father.
He was there in eternity past and will be there in eternity future.
We are only on earth a little while.
*-*
*14a** Blessed (Happy) /are /those who do His commandments,*
*We talked about this a little last week.
*
/John 12:48      *48 *He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him — the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.
NKJV/

/John 14:21      *21 *He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me.
And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him."
NKJV/
/-/
The truest sign that we love Jesus is that we will keep His commandments.
When you conscious is clear you are happy.
When you are doing what is right you are happy.
When you are happy you are blessed.
This is important because those that keep His commandments do not fear His coming in fact they look forward to His coming soon.
-
If we keep his commandments one of our rewards is to have the right to the tree of life.
*14b** …that they may have the right to the tree of life, *
The Tree of Life is mentioned ten times in the Bible.
Six times as a literal tree like the one in the garden.
/Rev 2:7              To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God."/
*-*
*Four times it is mentioned as an analogy in the book of proverbs.
*
/Prov 11:30         *30 *The fruit (reward) of the righteous is a tree of life, NKJV/
*-*
The tree of life was the substance for eternal life in the garden.
God removed man from access to that tree but through Jesus Christ we will be given the right to the tree of life.
There will be more than one tree of life for us.
/Rev 22:2-3       In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month.
The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
NKJV/
-
*14 …and may enter through the gates into the city.
*
There will be 12 gates to this city just like the old Jerusalem; this will be the New Jerusalem.
-
/Rev 21:2-3       Then I, John,*~* *saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband./
NKJV
-
