Sermon – A Message to the Churches

Scripture –     Rev 22:12-17

Rev 22:12-17

12 "And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.

1.     I am coming quickly

Three times at the close of this book Christ says, "I am coming quickly!" (vv. 7, 12, 20). The word "quickly" suggests "swiftly." It means that when these great events start to occur, there will be no delay.

There is an interesting command given in this chapter that deals with the coming of Christ.

This scene is very similar to the scene in Daniel between Daniel and an angel who is telling Daniel of what is to come.

Dan 12:4         "But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase." NKJV

The future events were so far off in the future that the angle told Daniel to seal up the book to keep the book shut until the time of the end.

But, look at what this angel tells John,

Rev 22:10-11   10 And he said to me, "Do not seal the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is at hand. 11 He who is unjust, let him be unjust still; he who is filthy, let him be filthy still; he who is righteous, let him be righteousstill; he who is holy, let him be holy still." NKJV

Quickly means swiftly and soon. I must conclude that the time of Jesus’ return is sooner than we think.

Matt 24:27-28 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.  NKJV

1 Cor 15:51-52           1 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed —  52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. NKJV

2.     My reward is with Me

When Jesus comes to earth He will have his rewards with Him. Jesus will come to give rewards and to Judge. Believers will receive rewards and sinners will receive judgment. There will be no delay.

Rev 11:18 The nations were angry, and Your wrath has come, And the time of the dead, that they should be judged, And that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints, And those who fear Your name, small and great

3.     give to every one according to his work

Matt 16:27      27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works. NKJV

There is not a mention of glory at the time of the rapture. He is just coming to take us away.

But when He comes to judge, that is when we will see His glory.

Matt 25:31   31 "When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy* angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. NKJV

Every time is read of rewards it pertains to believers, the saved. The work that believers do will be judged not the believer.

1 Cor 3:14-15            14 If anyone's work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone's work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. NKJV

The judgment will be of the believers’ works and will not affect the believer’s salvation.

Everyone’s works will not constitute the same reward. The rewards will match the works.

1 Cor 3:5-8     Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor. NKJV

13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last."*

I don’t think I need to spend time on this. You all should know by now that Jesus is eternal like the Father. He was there in eternity past and will be there in eternity future. We are only on earth a little while.

14a Blessed (Happy) are those who do His commandments,

We talked about this a little last week.

John 12:48      48 He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him — the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. NKJV

John 14:21      21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him." NKJV

The truest sign that we love Jesus is that we will keep His commandments. When you conscious is clear you are happy. When you are doing what is right you are happy. When you are happy you are blessed. This is important because those that keep His commandments do not fear His coming in fact they look forward to His coming soon.

If we keep his commandments one of our rewards is to have the right to the tree of life.

14b …that they may have the right to the tree of life,

The Tree of Life is mentioned ten times in the Bible. Six times as a literal tree like the one in the garden.

Rev 2:7              To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God."

Four times it is mentioned as an analogy in the book of proverbs.

Prov 11:30         30 The fruit (reward) of the righteous is a tree of life, NKJV

The tree of life was the substance for eternal life in the garden. God removed man from access to that tree but through Jesus Christ we will be given the right to the tree of life. There will be more than one tree of life for us.

Rev 22:2-3       In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. NKJV

14 …and may enter through the gates into the city.

There will be 12 gates to this city just like the old Jerusalem; this will be the New Jerusalem.

Rev 21:2-3       Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. NKJV

Let me give you a glimpse:

Rev 21:10-21   10 So he took me in the Spiritto a great, high mountain, and he showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God. 11 It shone with the glory of God and sparkled like a precious stone—like jasper as clear as crystal. 12 The city wall was broad and high, with twelve gates guarded by twelve angels. And the names of the twelve tribes of Israel were written on the gates. 13 There were three gates on each side—east, north, south, and west. 14 The wall of the city had twelve foundation stones, and on them were written the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.15 The angel who talked to me held in his hand a gold measuring stick to measure the city, its gates, and its wall. 16 When he measured it, he found it was a square, as wide as it was long. In fact, its length and width and height were each 1,400 miles.* 17 Then he measured the walls and found them to be 216 feet thick(according to the human standard used by the angel).18 The wall was made of jasper, and the city was pure gold, as clear as glass. 19 The wall of the city was built on foundation stones inlaid with twelve precious stones:the first was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst.21 The twelve gates were made of pearls—each gate from a single pearl! And the main street was pure gold, as clear as glass.

15 But* outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie.

Rev 21:25-27   25 Its gates shall not be shut at all by day(there shall be no night there). 26 And they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it. 27 But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causesan abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb's Book of Life. NKJV

16a "I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star."

My Angel – What does angel mean? We learned that an angel was most always used as a messenger. Christ has sent HIS angel to minister to the churches. The angel in this case may very well be the HS.

John 14:26   26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. NKJV

He wrote the seven letters to “the angels of the churches”. Those that preach and teach by the power of the Holy Spirit are to testify (be a witness) of the things of God and Christ for the equipping of the churches. By doing so no one has an excuse.

16bThe Root and the Offspring of David

Luke 20:41-44 41 And He said to them, "How can they say that the Christ is the Son of David?  42 Now David himself said in the Book of Psalms: 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand, 43 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool."'*  44 Therefore David calls Him 'Lord'; how is He then his Son?"  NKJV

As the Son of God Jesus was the “Root” (creation) of David and as the man He is of the linage (offspring) of David to fulfill the scriptures.

16c… the Bright and Morning Star."

Jesus is the splendor and glory to His kingdom; as the morning star ushers in the sun, so shall He usher in the unclouded and eternal glories of the everlasting kingdom.

Everything is new like a new day

17 And the Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say, "Come!" And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.

[The Spirit and the bride] All the prophets and all the apostles; the church of God under the Old Testament, and the church of Christ under the New.

[Say, Come.] Invite men to Jesus, that by him they may be saved and prepared for this kingdom.

[Let him that heareth] Let all who are privileged with reading and hearing the word of God, join in the general invitation to sinners.

[Him that is athirst] He who feels his need of salvation, and is longing to drink of the living fountain.

[And whosoever will] No soul is excluded: Jesus died for every man; every man may be saved; therefore let him who wills, who wishes for salvation, come and take the water of life freely-without money or price!

Matt 10:34-42

34 "Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword.

35 For I have come to 'set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law';

36 and 'a man's enemies will be those of his own household.'*

37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.

38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.

39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.

40 "He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.

41 He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.

42 And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward." NKJV
