Reaching the Next Generation

In Mark 6:30–44, this passage details one of Jesus’ greatest miracles, apart from the Resurrection, because this miracle is recorded in all four Gospels
Mark 6:30–44 KJV 1900
30 And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. 31 And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. 32 And they departed into a desert place by ship privately. 33 And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him. 34 And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things. 35 And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed: 36 Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat. 37 He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat? 38 He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes. 39 And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass. 40 And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties. 41 And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all. 42 And they did all eat, and were filled. 43 And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. 44 And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men.
A key verse to focus on today is verse 37: “You Feed Them”

You feed them

Jesus placed the responsibility of the group being fed on His disciples. This provided them the opportunity to put their faith in God’s leadership of their lives, believe in God to do great things in and through them, and build confidence that God would come through.
This account is more than people being fed; it is an account that God desires to use every person who loves Him.
God is intent that we would see the needs of people and minister to them—to see what God sees and hear what God hears, and respond. As we respond, needs are met, lives are changed, and God becomes known to others in a personal way.
This is our Opportunity
++Show God’s Love
++Meet Community Needs
++Make God Real to Others
One such opportunity we have as a church is to show God’s love to our schools. When we meet the needs of the community, lives are changed and the gospel becomes real as it is demonstrated to others.

Why are our local schools so important and strategic for us as a church?

Why must we Love our Schools?
++School Connects Our Community
The school is the hub for student, family, and the broader community connections.
If we desire to reach our community, reaching our schools must be part of what we do.
Why must we Love our Schools?
School Connects Our Community
++School represents about 20% of our community
Because with just students and school faculty and administration, at least 20 percent of one’s community is gathered at the school every weekday.
Why must we Love our Schools?
School Connects Our Community
School represents about 20% of our community
++School is an areas largest employer
(Share the conversations you have had with a local school and introduce what you aim to do as a congregation to serve your schools).
God has blessed us as a church so that we can in turn bless others, especially as we recognize needs and respond.
Principles From the Passage
++God desires to work in the lives of others through you. (v. 30–34)
Mark 6:30–34 KJV 1900
• Jesus and His disciples did not intend to stop.
They were looking for a place to rest, but people were running ahead of them. They were not going to just get away.
• Interruptions are not an inconvenience. Some of the greatest ministry moments as a church and individually come in interruptions.
• Jesus had compassion and welcomed them.
(34) f Although Jesus could have answered the need directly himself, He involved the disciples in finding a solution. God still does that today with us meeting and ministering to the needs of those around us.
Principles From the Passage
God desires to work in the lives of others through you. (v. 30–34)
++Our own resources and strength is never enough (35-37)
Mark 6:35–37 KJV 1900
35 And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed: 36 Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat. 37 He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat?
• Even if we are doing Kingdom work that reaches our community, we will never have enough money, resources, or people.
This is why we need His power and His provision.
• Phillip gave them the cost of this miracle—half of a day’s wage.
Phillip unintentionally began to dampen the faith of others.
This is an example of why we must be careful with our words.
• Speak words of faith! The words we say have a huge impact.
Speak your belief that God will do miracles and that He can and will do a work in your home and your workplace.
• The disciples were coming off a season of numerous miracles.
This is a big lesson for us. If we don’t remember the miracles God has done in the past or talk about what He is currently doing, we won’t have the faith to see God do miracles in and through us now!
Principles From the Passage
God desires to work in the lives of others through you. (v. 30–34)
Our own resources and strength is never enough (35-37)
++When we give what we have to God, He will use It. (38)
Mark 6:38 KJV 1900
38 He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes.
• An amazing part of this account is that the meal consists of flat, three- to four-inch wide pieces of bread and two tiny pieces of fish. It is not a big meal by any stretch of the imagination.
• Only one person in over twenty thousand people gave their meal.
Remember this is five thousand men PLUS women and children.
• God delights in using anyone who is willing.
He delights to work in you and through you.
God will take what we have and do so much more with it.
In that same spirit, we bring what we want to do for our schools and have to be willing to let God maximize it for His glory
Principles From the Passage
God desires to work in the lives of others through you. (v. 30–34)
Our own resources and strength is never enough (35-37)
When we give what we have to God, He will use It.(38)
++When we are thankful for what is NOT enough, it can be multiplied into what is MORE than enough. (v. 39–42)
Mark 6:39–42 KJV 1900
39 And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass. 40 And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties. 41 And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all. 42 And they did all eat, and were filled.
Jesus did not break bread for the whole group—it was just enough to give to the disciples.
It is in the giving it was multiplied. (41)
• When we give what we have of our time, talent, money, prayers, compassion, etc., it will be multiplied to both that person and to us.
• They all ate until they all were full! (42)
Principles From the Passage
God desires to work in the lives of others through you. (v. 30–34)
Our own resources and strength is never enough (35-37)
When we give what we have to God, He will use It.(38)
When we are thankful for what is NOT enough, it can be multiplied into what is MORE than enough. (v. 39–42)
++God knows our needs down to the smallest of details. (v. 43–44)
Mark 6:43–44 KJV 1900
43 And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. 44 And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men.
• Yes, the disciples were hungry as well.
Over twenty thousand people eat and there are twelve full baskets leftover.
Why twelve baskets? There are twelve disciples.
• Jesus feeds the twenty thousand as well as His twelve disciples.
• God knows! He knows our smallest need and the needs around us.
As we live with our lives dedicated to Him, He will use us. He will use you to meet the needs of people.
