GENESIS #13 Genesis 20 & 21 Genesis 20 Gerar Shur (wall) Defensive wall Kadesh Abraham moves from Hebron Move was to get new pasture Gerar, area will become Phillistia King of Gerar, Abimelech Kadesh same as Kadesh-Barnea Shur in Egypt Shura = shur-a means “a wall”1 GAZA STRIP IS FORMER PHILISTIA PALESTINIAN IS GREEK FOR PHILISTINES 2 ABRAHAM STARTS HIS DECEPTION AGAIN Tells King Abimelech that Sarah is his sister Abimelech = my father is king Another and different Abimelech later in the Bible Probably took Sarah NOT as kidnapping, but to make her a wife and ally 3 YHWH THREATENS ABIMELECH Abimelech’s defense is that 1) he did not know Sarah was a married woman 2) He did not have sex with her God accepts his defense and says it was divine power that kept him from sin God demands Abimelech return Sarah 4 DREAMS AND VISIONS Standard way of communicating between God and men in that era Abimelech was a pagan Yehoveh has absolute control over all things including HUMANS! YHWH will talk with NON-Believers Abimelech easily accepted this new god5 THE ENLIGHTENMENT Before the 1700’s A.D., history knew nothing of a society that did not believe in a higher being (a god) The Enlightenment was the birth of Atheism and Secular Humanism 6 ABRAHAM THE INTERCESSOR Abraham would plead on Abimelech’s behalf Abraham had pled for the “righteous” of Sodom Interceding for Lot A “type” and pattern of Moses, later on Messiah, being developed Abraham admits it was fear that drove him to lying (again) about Sarah Abimelech added wealth to Abraham and asked him to stay 7 GENESIS 21 25 years since promises of chapter 12 The implication was that Abraham and Sarah would have children Abraham considered Ishmael to be his heir GOD’S PROPHECIES SHOULD BE TAKEN LITERALLY 8 ISRAEL WILL NOT BE EXPELLED FROM THE LAND! 9 ISAAC IS BORN AT THE APPOINTED TIME ✤Yitz’chak (Isaac)= “he laughs” ✤Many “set” & “appointed” times by God in the Bible ✤Man has NO authority to change or abolish Yehoveh’s set times ISAAC IS BORN AT THE APPOINTED TIME ✤It is an axiom that God’s timing is as important an element to any prophetic happening, as the details of the happening itself. ISAAC IS BORN AT THE APPOINTED TIME ✤Yitz’chak (Isaac)= “he laughs” ✤Many “set” & “appointed” times by God in the Bible ✤Man has NO authority to change or abolish Yehoveh’s set times YEHOVEH DECLARES THE SET TIMES, AND WHAT IS HOLY Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts. 2 And by the seventh day God completed His work which He had done; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. OUR DUTY IS NOT TO QUESTION THE APPOINTED TIMES, IT IS TO DISCOVER THEM AND TO OBSERVE THEM MAN HAS NO AUTHORITY TO BESTOW HOLINESS UPON ANYTHING OR ANYONE 11 THE MIRACULOUS BIRTH OF ISAAC Abraham 100 years old, Sarah 90 Sarah had not given birth before Amazing she survived the birthing process at 90! Ishmael was a teenager when Isaac was born Sarah insists Hagar and Ishmael be banished 12 GOD WOULD SUPPLY EARTHLY BLESSING TO ISHMAEL Yehoveh promised 12 princes (12 tribes) to Ishmael SAME NUMBER AS THE TRIBES OF ISRAEL! The ONLY thing Ishmael could not have as an equivalent was the covenant promise…. Abraham loved Ishmael and it hurt him terribly to send him away 14 MAL’ACH ELOHIM CALLS OUT TO HAGAR Mal’ach Elohim means “messenger of god” God or an Angel? Says “I will make a great nation out of him……” This HAD TO BE some manifestation of YHWH Ishmael is NOT promised land (territory)….ONLY 12 nations of PEOPLE Ishmael will become desert dwellers, in the Sinai and Arabian 15 Peninsulas PARALLELS BETWEEN ISAAC AND MESSIAH YESHUA Both are “sons of promise” Lengthy time between promise and birth Miraculous births: Isaac from Sarah’s “dead” womb, Yahshua from a virgin’s womb Both had their names decided by God BEFORE their births Precise times (set times) set by God for births of Isaac and Yahshua 16
