The Tragedy of Sorrow

Sorrow is a reality we will all face
Sorrow is antithetical to joy
Sorrow can be turned to joy
How has God turned your sorrow into joy in your life?

The Context of John 16

Jesus is preparing the disciples for His death
It is for our advantage that He goes because the Holy Spirit will come in His place ( John 16:7)
He will judge, guide and glorify
He will take what the Father gave to Jesus and declare it to us (John 16:15)
How does the Holy Spirit encourage you in your day to day life (Be specific)?
The New American Commentary: John 12–21 (3) The Fifth Spirit Statement: Authentic Guide (16:12–15)

The divine resource of the Spirit is the gift Jesus sent from the Father to Christian disciples in a hostile world so that they could cope effectively with the anxiety that is inherent in living in a life-context that openly resists the proclamation of the Gospel.

The Absence of the Savior

Jesus is going to leave them
He is going to die
He is going to die a shameful and bloody death
If their savior dies, where will they find salvation?
While our savior is absent, how can we be sure of our salvation, both spiritual and physical?

What is the true basis of our sorrows and what will be the source of its transformation?

The Transformation

Sorrow turns to joy when we remember that God is using our pain to bring about something new
Sorrow turns to joy when we remember that death is a temporal state
Sorrow turns to joy when we remember that Jesus has conquered death and has overcome the world
Sorrow turns to joy when we remember that He is coming again and we see him face to face
How will seeing him face to face change how we see our sorrow?

Closing Thought

Believers always find themselves living in between promise and fulfillment. We can have joy while we wait because Jesus while gone is not dead. He is resurrected with the Father and is coming again to redeem and restore and set the world right.
How does the truth of the resurrection provide you hope as you struggle with sorrow in your own life?

Our Response to God: Give our sorrows to Him and look to His return as the hope of our salvation, both physical and spiritual
