Opening Prayer

Text Reading:

Verse 1: Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase?
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
Because grace has been proven by Paul in the previous chapter....
To be much more greater than sin,..
Are we to sin more and therefore get even more grace?
Are we to take advantage of God?
Are we to play games with God?
If by the preaching of a justification based solely on the free grace of God...
Are we encouraging people to sin?
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
Verse 2: May it never be!
A thousand times no!!!
Never, Never, Never!!
Absolutely not!!
Paul uses this expression 14 times in his letters (10 in Romans alone)
This expression is the strongest Greek idiom for repudiating a statement...
It contains a sense of outrage...
That anyone would ever even think that the statement was possible to be true
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
Verse 2: How shall we who died to sin still live in it?
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
What Paul describes is impossible
How can we die to sin...
Yet want to live in it?
If you still live in sin...
If you are pleased be sin...
And desire to live a life of sin...
Ask yourself…
Are you really Born Again?
Is Jesus the Lord of your life?
Because it is impossible to live in sin if you really died to it
Verse 3: All of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
This baptism is of the Spirit...
This is baptism from above...
This is being Born Again
All Christians have,...
by placing saving faith in Him,...
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
been spiritually immersed into the person of Christ,...
that is, united and identified with Him
However,...
Before we can be Born Again...
We must first die to ourselves
As Christ dies on the cross we must die too
Verse 4: Buried with Him through baptism into death
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), Ro 6:4.
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
To die to self is to die to sin
Our old self,...
The depraved sinner that does not seek God...
The depraved sinner that committed high treason against God...
Must die...
Never to return
Verse 4: Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life
As Christ was risen from the dead,...
So we too are made to come alive again after dying to ourselves
We become a new creation,...
No longer totally depraved
We can now seek God
We become Born Again
There is a new quality and character to our lives...
A new principle of life
This speaks of the believer’s regeneration
Another way to look at it...
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
Whereas sin describes the old life...
Now righteousness describes the new life
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .

Verse 5: United with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
If we are a genuine follower of Christ
If we are truly in Him
Then, just as we are united in His death...
We are united in His resurrection
Verse 6: Old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
When I read this I reflect back at my old self...
32 years I was a dead man walking...
When I look back at my past...
During those first 32 years of my life I see a different person...
A person who died...
And I say good riddance...
The Greek word for “old” does not refer to something old in years...
But to something that is worn out and useless
This is how we should view ourselves
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
Our old self needs to be crucified on that cross...
Why?
“In order that our body of sin might be done away with”
In order to be Born Again...
First we must die
Verse 6: So that we would no longer be slaves to sin
So, what happens when we become Born Again?
Our slavery to sin has ended...
We are set free
Think about this..
Tell me
When set free..
Will a slave that has a cruel master go back to that evil master?
No, get away from that harsh master...
Joyful to be free
Verse 7: He who has died is freed from sin.
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
The price to be set free paid for by Jesus
But we ourselves are required to die from our sin
Think of it this way...
When Abraham Lincoln made a new law to free all slaves...
Technically, by the law a slave can walk free...
But if slave never hears this good news...
If the slave is convinced by his harsh master that this good needs is fantasy...
Will the slave continue in harsh bondage?
It not until the slave truly accepts this good news of this new law
This is not just of a head knowledge of the law...
But also believing in it by acting upon it
Verse 8: We have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
Our death to our old selves is not a sad story...
In fact it is a precursor to our hope...
That we shall live with Him for eternity
However...
The context suggests that Paul means...
Not only that believers will live in the presence of Christ for eternity
But also that all who have died with Christ,...
Will live a life here, on earth, that is fully consistent with His holiness
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
To die is truly to gain
Once we are Born Again by Him...
We are now considered with Him now and forever
Verse 9: Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
Christ only had to die once
All sin is paid in full
Unlike the High Priests who had to annually sacrifice...
In the Holy of Holies every year for the sins of Isreal...
Christ’s death was a one time, permanent and everlasting act...
Christ defeated both sin and death
This is why the resurrection is so important...
Jesus being raised from the dead by the Father...
Indicates the Father acceptance of Jesus’ sacrafice
Death, the punishment for sin...
No longer has power over anyone who is in Christ
Verse 10: He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
“He died once and for all”...
Means in the sense of once and never again or once and for all time
The life He lives is fr the Glory of God
Colin G. Kruse, Paul’s Letter to the Romans, ed. D. A. Carson, The Pillar New Testament Commentary (Cambridge, U.K.; Nottingham, England; Grand Rapids, MI: William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company; Apollos, 2012), 266.
So when we are made brand new...
We no longer live to the glory of ourselves...
But to the Glory of God

Verse 11: Consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
Again, we need to be aware of our unregenerate person...
Our dead selves...
Who was a slave to the power of sin...
Under the influence of Satan
But now...
We are made alive...
Our purpose to live for God’s Glory
Verse 12: Do not let sin reign in your mortal body
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
Now that we a are no longer a slave to sin...
We must fight to keep sin out of our life...
We must take our thoughts captive...
We can only do this by the power of the Holy Spirit...
That we get at the time we are Born Again
Verse 13: Present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
Once we are saved...
That does not mean to continue sinning
If that is the case...
Where a person claims to be saved and continues to live in sin...
They clearly are still dead...
Never yet made alive in Christ
Once saved...
An indicator of genuine conversion...
Is a new life...
Turning away from sin...
Having a desire, not a feeling of burden, but a desire...
To present oneself in front of God...
Each day we must give ourselves afresh to God.
Crossway Bibles, The ESV Study Bible (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2008), 2167.
Verse 14: Sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace
Paul, is reminding us...
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .xxxx
We are not a slave to sin anymore...
xxxx
We are now under God’s grace as believers
We have been given the power...
By the Holy Spirit...
To battle sin

Verse 15: Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be!
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
Again, Paul is asking again the question he asked in the opening of the chapter...
Are we to be carnal Christians?
Do we believe in cheap grace?
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, anti-Nazi German Pastor and theologian, in his classic book, The Cost of Discipleship, said
“Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, Communion without confession, absolution without personal confession. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate.”
Is it possible to serve two masters?...
May it never be!!!
A Thousand times No!!!
Verse 16: You are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
We are no longer slaves to sin...
Not no longer slaves...
In fact…
You are always a slave...
The question is are you a slave to sin or a slave to Christ?
The answer to that is not what you give with your mouth
The answer to that is to the one in which you obey
Being a slave to sin, you ignored God’s commands
Being a slave to Christ, means ignoring Satan’s wicked ways
Obedience or surrender to Jesus as Lord...
Results in righteousness
Verse 17-18: You were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness
18 and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
How does one become obedient?...
It comes from hearing of the teaching of the Word of God.
So, first comes hearing...
Then comes obedience...
We now do good because we are now slaves to righteousness
The Greek word for “form” on verse 17 is a word for a mold...
Paul’s point is that God pours His new children into the mold of divine truth
New believers have an innate and compelling desire to know and obey God’s Word
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .

Verse 22: xxxxx
We go from slavery to slavery...
From slave to Sin...
To slave to God
However, keep in mind this fact....
When we where a slave to sin we had a cruel and evil taskmaster...
Now that we are slaves to Christ we have a master we would never want to be free from...
If I told you today, in this physical world, that you are to be a slave for the rest of your life...
You may not be to happy about that...
But imagine if your master....
Was a Trillionaire...
Legally adopted you as their child...
Treated you like a son or daughter...
Provided for you an unlimited bank account...
Provided for all your needs, etc....
On top of this...
He is the kindest and most loving person in existence...
Would you
He cared about you to the point He delights to even count the hairs on your head...
I don’t now about you...
But forget my pride...
I will gladly be a slave to that kind of Master
Verse 22: Resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .
What is the results of Christ as our Master...
First comes sanctification...
Verse 1: xxxxx
Becoming more Christlike
Every year...
Are you looking more like Christ?
Can you see a very real positive change in your life?
Then comes the outcome...
Eternal life
When we become a genuine believer in Christ...
We are given Eternal life...
This promise is our hope that drives us
We must look forward to this joy set before us
Verse 23: For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord
New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (La Habra, CA: The Lockman Foundation, 1995), .

This verse describes two absolutes...
First, spiritual death is the paycheck for every man’s slavery to sin...
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
And second, eternal life is a free gift God gives undeserving sinners who believe in His Son
John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), .
I spite of our past, all whom God has justified will experience personal holiness
Being in sin...
Serving sin as your master...
Leads to death
Eternal life is free...
For those that surrender to Christ...
For those who place His Lordship over their own
